In 1977, Max Neuhaus turned a triangle of pedestrian space between 45th and 46th Streets in Times Square into an island of harmonic sound. The rich textures of that sound continue today, emanating from beneath the sidewalk grating, to anonymously reach an individual's ears as if one has stumbled upon a secret. Known as Times Square, the celebrated installation was restored in 2002 with support from Dia Art Foundation, which further commissioned a site-specific piece, Time Piece Beacon, from Neuhaus in 2006 for its museum in Beacon, New York. This stunning book--the only volume in print dedicated solely to the work of Neuhaus--takes these two projects as a point of departure from which to consider the singular impact this artist has had in establishing sound as a medium in contemporary art. Raoul De Keyser's mainly abstract art is remarkable for its dimensional realism--that is, its connection of the subjective and objective dimensions of experience. De Keyser personalizes abstraction, he gives it a human face; many of his pictures include motifs drawn from his immediate surroundings or his own personal experience. Instead of searching for an overarching formal principle--as did the pioneers of abstraction from Kandinsky's time through the 1960s--De Keyser attunes his art to the significance of improvisation and chance in all life, and contemporary life in particular. Thus we find in the art of Raoul De Keyser much of the contingency, inconsistency, textual precariousness, modal variety, particularity, unpredictability, disorder and flux that we find in our daily lives. This catalogue, published on the occasion of a touring exhibition of De Keyser's work, documents in sumptuous reproductions the artist's oeuvre over the past twenty years.

Smoothly painted panels laid out on the floor have earned Adrian Schiess (b. Zurich, 1959; lives and works in Mouans-Sartoux, France) international renown. Roundly rejecting the traditional forms of painting, the artist has developed a singular oeuvre, gradually effacing all traces of manual craftsmanship. His objects, which may be placed in a room as desired, are conceived as platforms of creative engagement with the appearance and disappearance of painting. Schiess?s large-format industrial panels, which are executed in spray paint by specialized car varnishers, have become integral components of buildings by world-famous architects including Norman Foster and Herzog & de Meuron. For this book, Schiess has compiled spectacular series of photographs and extensive conversations with the art historian Ulrich Loock that probe the peculiar quality of his work: hybrid and fluctuating and yet always utterly distinctive.
