Ulster Historical Foundation

The United Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe are almost coterminous with the modern counties of Derry and Donegal; they were united in 1834 and since then have been administered by one Bishop. This volume is the third in the series of modern revisions of Canon J.B. Leslie's pioneering work on clergy succession lists for the dioceses of the Church of Ireland. Canon Leslie's list for Derry was publised in 1937 and for Raphoe in 1940; the present book brings the lists as far as 1999 and incorporates much information which has come to light since the earlier lists were published. Also included are short parish histories with photographs of the churches. Facsimle reproductions of Canon Leslie's earlier volumes are included thus providing the reader with a book of reference on the clergy of the United Dioceses reaching back to earlier times. Generations to come will be indebted to Canons Frederick W. Fawcett and David W.T. Crooks, both active clergymen in the Diocese for providing an indispensable book of reference.

The Dioceses of Down, Connor and Dromore were united from 1842 to 1945, at which time Connor was separated from Down and Dromore. The united diocese had jurisdiction over Antrim, Down and parts of Armagh and Londonderry. The Diocese of Connor covers all of Antrim except the parishes of Aghalee, Ballyscullion and Drumbeg; parishes of Ballyaughrin, Ballymoney, Ballyrashane, Ballywillin, Coleraine, Kildallagh in County Londonderry, and Blaris and Lambeg in County Down belong to Connor.

This volume corrects that distortion "the Famine didn't happen in Ulster." Ulster was indeed spared what a local newspaper called "the horrors of Skibereen," but nonetheless, the severity of the famine, particularly in the winter 1846-7, is all too apparent in each of the nine counties. 95 inmates of Lurgan Workhouse died in one week in February 1847; and 351 people queued to get into Enniskillen Workhouse in one day. What was done to limit the tragedy? Contentious issues such as the effectiveness of government relief measures, the response of local landlords, and the role of the churches are all assessed.
