ISA Science, the research format of University for Music and Performing Art Vienna's summer school has turned out successfully both in terms of its international resonance and its effects on the institution's academic community. Therefore the event's program chairs have decided to publish a selection of what has been discussed and presented so far, demonstrating the considerable diversity of disciplines, approaches and topics.

In the proposed symposium we aim to explore methodological and theoretical issues and to present studies of different urban settings of comparative purposes. Vienna and current research projects on the musical diversity in the capital of Austria will be one focus. Studies form other parts of the world - Lisbon, Berlin, New York, Chicago, Calcutta - will contribute to a global perspective. Ethnomusicologists from Europe and the USA have been invited to participate by giving presentations and joining the panel discussions. One final Roundtable will explore ethnomusicological contributions to the management of urban musical diversity. A concert will present some of Veinna's minority music activities.

Following the format of the journal, the texts, in three parts, testify musical experience in different representations, from elementary school practices to music festivals and resident chamber music, mentioning categories accepted in the Portuguese society, among others, referring to the popular, folk/world and art music.

Music and Migration

The ICTM Study Group Music and Minorities was founded officially in 1997 and is thus one of the youngest Study Groups within the ICTM. The volume Manifold Identities: Studies on Music and Minorities is a collection of the papers of the second Study Group meeting, which was held in Lublin/Poland, August 25-31, 2002. Chapters are included on music from Badakhshan, the Roma, the Arvanites of Greece, Albania, Poland, Carpathia, the Belorussians of Poland, Slovakia, France, Germany, Turkey, Croatia, the Sorbians, the Masai, the Andes, Venezuela, the Jews of Poland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Sicily, Azerbaijan, and elsewhere. The volume is also replete with articles of a theoretical orientation, with a special focus on an ethnomusicological theorisation of issues revolving around minority identities and its relation to music-making and perceiving.
