Editors’ Foreword The fundamental changes currently taking place in the national and international science landscapes can no longer be overlooked. Within those changes, reforms do not go ‘as planned’ but, as is always the case with processes of rationali- tion, have a series of unintended effects. At the same time it becomes incre- ingly clear who in this process are the winners and who are the losers, although this is still subject to fluctuation and change. This can be illustrated by two - amples from current events: Where the range of taught courses is concerned, as part of the Bologna Process the new structuring of student study paths and their organisation is aimed at unifying the European area of science to ensure a study that is equally permissive and efficient. However, it is to be deplored that the mobility of s- dents has become more restricted because of an increasing specialisation in the available study paths. Also, bachelor degrees do not meet with the anticipated high response from the labour market in all countries, so that the master’s degree is becoming more or less a ‘must’, while at the same time the number of study places on master’s courses is limited. Instead of the intended reduction in the duration of study time in comparison to the previous German ‘Magister’ and ‘Diplom’, rather a prolongation in the duration of studies has been recorded.

Changes in Fatherhood How do structural changes in the welfare state, in gender relations and work affect concepts and realities of fatherhood? The authors analyse cultural images and representations of fatherhood, varieties of fatherhood in relation to social backgrounds, organisational infl uences, as well as the impact of political and legal interventions on confi gurations of fatherhood. With an interdisciplinary approach this book’s contributions investigate the sometimes contradictory relationship between cultural representations and social practices of fatherhood. They contextualise diverse fatherhoods in various social backgrounds, ethnicities, ages and different national contexts. Refl ecting methodological challenges is crucial to the volume’s approach: Which parameters are used to quantify change? Which links and interactions between cultural, individual, organizational and societal dimensions do exist regarding the development of new social confi gurations of fatherhood? How can the complex interaction between structural constraints and agency be analysed? Can certain agents of change be identifi ed? How can social change be conceptualized? This volume links to international comparative research and shows how fruitful it can be to break disciplinary boundaries.

In 1987, Berlin as a whole became a laboratory for architecture. A wide range of notable buildings with a unique density was created in the East and the West in connection with the city?s 750th anniversary. While the buildings were vilified at the time, they now appear as important witnesses to a ?postmodern? era of building, which called the traditional architecture of the modern living environment into question. Today, the buildings have disappeared, been modified, or are threatened with demolition. Die Debatten über den Zusammenhang von „Organisation und Geschlecht“ erleben seit den 1970er Jahren auch im deutschsprachigen Raum einen bemerkenswerten Aufschwung. So werden immer mehr Organisationstypen, Hochschulen, Sportvereine oder Unternehmen und Organisationseinheiten wie Personalabteilungen, darauf hin analysiert, welche Rolle das Geschlecht der Beschäftigten im Alltag der Organisationen spielt und welche unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen die Herstellungsprozesse von Geschlechterdifferenzen haben. Eine zentrale theoretische Frage ist dabei, ob Organisationen grundlegend als geschlechtsneutral zu analysieren sind oder eher als durch Geschlecht strukturierte soziale Gebilde betrachtet werden müssen. Das Buch führt in die Dynamik des Themenkomplexes ein.
