Developing Writing Skills in German, is a unique course designed to improve the reading and writing skills of intermediate students of German. Presenting a wide range of authentic written materials, the book aims to develop reading strategies and the ability to write texts of various types - essays, articles and reviews - while imparting an understanding of important aspects of German society. From the environment to consumerism, each chapter focuses on a different theme and concentrates on the advancement of particular skills; all the chapters conclude with a task appropriate to the skills focus of the section. Summary writing, note-taking, the use of mind-maps to collect ideas, and other strategies for successful writing in German are presented here. This course is suitable both for classroom use and independent study, with feedback and answer key supplied at the back of the book.

English summary: Autobiographical writing has been an inherent part of Western culture and literary traditions for more than 2000 years. Especially during the last years, a considerable amount of research has been conducted on the genre. This volume, however, focuses on three fields which have not yet been at the centre of literary studies: firstly, the classical tradition, secondly, autobiographies of the 18th and early 19th century, which were mostly written in Latin and refer back to their classical predecessors, and thirdly, those modern and postmodern (meta-) autobiographies which reflect on the genre and play with conceptions of historiography, fact and fiction. This collection of essays offers 21 readings of fairly unknown autobiographies and provides new perspectives on the genre and its functions. German description: Autobiographisches Schreiben und Autobiographien gehoren seit mehr als zwei Jahrtausenden zu den wesentlichen Charakteristika der abendlandischen Kultur und Literatur, obwohl der Begriff der Autobiographie sehr viel junger ist. Wie es ihrer Bedeutung entspricht, darf die Autobiographie als Gattung insgesamt als recht gut erforscht gelten, jedoch mit unverkennbaren Forschungslucken, von denen der vorliegende Band exemplarisch drei Schwerpunkte aufgreift: die klassischen Traditionen der Autobiographie, die zumeist lateinische Autobiographik der Renaissance und des 18. und fruhen 19. Jahrhunderts, die ihrerseits zum Teil Rezeption der klassischen Autobiographie-Traditionen ist, und die moderne und postmoderne, erkenntnistheoretische, epistemologische oder literatur- und geschichtstheoretische Fragen auslotende faktuale und fiktionale Autobiographie vornehmlich englischsprachiger Provenienz. Die 21 Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes verstehen sich (innerhalb dieser Schwerpunkte) jeweils als exemplarische Einzelstudien, die sich auf nahezu unbekannte, oder wenig beachtete Autobiographien konzentrieren, diese vorstellen und in ihrer gattungsgeschichtlichen sowie ihrer funktionalen Bedeutung erschliessen.

Published some two years after Ben Jonson's famous Roman play Seianus His Fall, the anonymous Claudius Tiberius Nero (1607) covers the whole period of the notorious Tiberius' reign (14 - 37 A.D.). The anonymous dramatist, who is «well seene in Antiquities, but most especially inward with Cornelius Tacitus», presents a chronicle play revelling in malicious designs, sombre plans and bloody outrages. This critical old-spelling edition of a hitherto neglected Roman play contains a text, notes, both textual and explanatory, a detailed introduction by the editor, and five appendices with a wealth of comparative material.
