Virginia Wolf

The Waves is a 1931 novel by Virginia Woolf. It is considered her most experimental work, and consists of soliloquies spoken by the book's six characters: Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny, and Louis. Also important is Percival, the seventh character, though readers never hear him speak in his own voice. The soliloquies that span the characters' lives are broken up by nine brief third-person interludes detailing a coastal scene at varying stages in a day from sunrise to sunset. Each of the nine sections begins with a description of the sea, its surroundings and the position of the sun in the sky.

The Waves

La señora Dalloway (título original en inglés, Mrs. Dalloway) es la cuarta novela de Virginia Woolf, publicada el 14 de mayo de 1925. Detalla un día en la vida de Clarissa Dalloway, en la Inglaterra posterior a la Primera Guerra Mundial. La señora Dalloway continúa considerándose una de las más conocidas novelas de Woolf. La novela sigue a Clarissa Dalloway a través de un solo día en Inglaterra después de la Gran Guerra en una narrativa de estilo de flujo de consciencia. Construida a través de dos pequeñas historias que Woolf había escrito previamente («La señora Dalloway en Bond Street» y su inconclusa «El Primer Ministro») la historia de la novela son los preparativos de Clarissa para una fiesta que va a ofrecer esa noche. Invitada por dos universidades de mujeres, en octubre de 1928, para hablar sobre las mujeres y la ficción, Virginia Woolf preparó una verdadera clase magistral sobre desigualdad de género y de clase. La autora dialoga con libros que va sacando de la biblioteca, con la intención de encontrar allí cuál pudo haber sido la razón por la que las bibliotecas no cuentan con autoras mujeres sino hasta el siglo XVIII. Virginia cuestiona, interroga, acusa, concede a veces, y descubre, quizás hasta con algún asombro, la verdad: si las mujeres no habían tenido un espacio dentro de la Historia, si las mujeres no habían tenido un lugar de igualdad en los espacios de educación formal y de formación y desarrollo artístico e intelectual, era porque siempre habían sido oprimidas por un mundo regido íntegramente por varones. Frente a este descubrimiento, muy significativo para un 1928 de entreguerras, cuestiona su propio lugar de privilegio y se pregunta: ¿por qué yo puedo escribir libremente?, ¿por qué puedo dedicarme a la escritura? Y se responde: porque cuento con 500 libras anuales y un cuarto propio.

After graduating, he leaves for London, where he interacts with a wide range of individuals, both impoverished and from the wealthy class; yet he never fully connects to a meaningful human relationship. Jacob, questioning whether he is a failure, decides to leave London and travels to Greece. Fortunes abroad turn precarious, and he returns to London only to be sent off to the war, where he is killed in action. As E.M. Forester remarked at the publication of Jacob's Room, "A new type of fiction has swum into view." Woolf has created a transformative reading experience conveying the emptiness of one individual's life by leaving out the traditional elements of plot and character, yet she manages to question the ways we fail to see each other as we actually are.
