Maestro dello stile avvolgente e coinvolgente, inventore di un amalgama inconfondibile fra testo e immagine, W.G. Sebald è stato l’unica apparizione di grande rilievo nella letteratura di lingua tedesca dopo Thomas Bernhard. Pochi mesi prima della sua tragica, recentissima scomparsa, aveva pubblicato "Austerlitz", il suo unico romanzo in senso classico, subito accolto, dalla Germania agli Stati Uniti all’Inghilterra, come un memorabile evento. Jacques Austerlitz è un professore di storia dell’architettura, studioso di quei luoghi (edifici militari, stazioni ferroviarie, penitenziari, tribunali) che, soprattutto nell’Ottocento, tendevano ad assumere forme involontariamente visionarie, sovraccarichi com’erano di significati simbolici. Alto, dinoccolato, dai capelli prima biondi e poi ingrigiti, molto somigliante a Wittgenstein cui lo accomuna un vecchio zaino che costantemente porta in spalla, Austerlitz vive a Londra in un appartamento spoglio come una cella, privo di affetti e povero di amicizie. Dietro la sua eccentrica e vastissima dottrina si spalanca il vuoto. Austerlitz semplicemente non sa chi è – e a lungo ha resistito ad accertarlo. Ma a un certo punto, come se si trattasse di intraprendere una delle usuali peregrinazioni erudite alla ricerca di un edificio o di un luogo ignorato, si mette alla ricerca delle proprie tracce. Così scoprirà di essere giunto a Londra, durante la guerra, con uno di quei convogli di bambini che dall’Europa centrale partivano per l’Inghilterra, mentre i genitori venivano deportati nei campi di concentramento e di sterminio. Strada per strada (a Praga, Theresienstadt, Parigi), volto per volto, oggetto per oggetto, fotografia per fotografia, emerge un passato lacerante, che Austerlitz sente di avere sempre ospitato in sé come una sequenza di negativi non ancora sviluppati. Tutta la somma sapienza evocativa di Sebald sembra concentrarsi in questo itinerario di ricerca, da cui promana un’angoscia che prende alla gola. Sebald si è spesso presentato ai lettori nei panni del viandante saturnino, sulle trac­ce degli autori prediletti oppure intento a ricostruire le traiettorie di esistenze erra­bonde e sradicate, attraverso paesaggi sem­pre vividamente descritti, si tratti del Suf­folk o di una città italiana. In realtà è stato soprattutto un «viaggiatore nel tempo», perché «occuparsi del passato ... è ciò che fanta­smi e scrittori hanno in comune»: e se la Storia obbedisce a leggi imperscrutabili, resta quanto meno la possibilità di coglie­re, vagabondando in libertà attraverso il passato, barbagli di una verità che ci sareb­be altrimenti negata. Accade quando Sebald, in Corsica, scopre il tenace rappor­to - perturbante per noi che tendiamo a sbarazzarci della memoria come di una zavorra - che lì da sempre si intrattiene con i morti, e in particolare la sorprenden­te figura dell’«acciatore», vero ponte fra la vita e l’aldilà. O quando la cronaca – fissata nei Diari – del viaggio da Praga a Parigi com­piuto da Kafka nel 1911 insieme a Max Brod gli si rivela misteriosamente un river­bero dei suoi stessi ricordi, al punto che le varie tappe gli sono «più familiari di quan­to lo sia mai divenuto in seguito qualsiasi altro luogo». O, ancora, quando grazie a Nabokov, incarnazione del senso più verti­ginoso dell’esilio, comprende che «se vo­gliamo annullare il tempo possiamo riu­scirci solo a patto di rievocare minuziosa­mente gli oggetti da un pezzo caduti nel­l’oblio». Laddove, come in queste pagine, l’impresa abbia successo, si attinge infatti «un regno luminoso, appena soffuso di un alito surreale come lo sono tutti i prodigi, e ci si ritrova, per così dire, sulla soglia del­la rivelazione di una verità assoluta».

After Nature, W. G. Sebald’s first literary work, now translated into English by Michael Hamburger, explores the lives of three men connected by their restless questioning of humankind’s place in the natural world. From the efforts of each, “an order arises, in places beautiful and comforting, though more cruel, too, than the previous state of ignorance.” The first figure is the great German Re-naissance painter Matthias Grünewald. The second is the Enlightenment botanist-explorer Georg Steller, who accompanied Bering to the Arctic. The third is the author himself, who describes his wanderings among landscapes scarred by the wrecked certainties of previous ages. After Nature introduces many of the themes that W. G. Sebald explored in his subsequent books. A haunting vision of the waxing and waning tides of birth and devastation that lie behind and before us, it confirms the author’s position as one of the most profound and original writers of our time.

In neun Studien untersucht Sebald den Themenkomplex Heimat und Exil, der für die österreichische Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts so charakteristisch ist. Seine Arbeiten setzen im frühen 19. Jahrhundert ein, bei dem nur wenig bekannten Charles Sealsfield und schlagen den Bogen über die gleichfalls vernachlässigten Schtetlgeschichten Leopold Komperts, über den Wiener Fin-de-siècle-Literaten Peter Altenberg, über Franz Kafka, Joseph Roth bis hinein in die Gegenwart, die durch Jean Améry, Gerhard Roth und Peter Handke vertreten ist.
