Dieses Buch stellt eine der wenigen empirischen Arbeiten in der russistischen Pragmatik dar, die sich auf ein umfangreiches Korpus stützt. Sie vereint eingehende sprachsystemische Untersuchungen aus dem Bereich der russischen Lexik, Syntax und Semantik sowie Betrachtungen zur Kulturspezifik des Schweigens. Schweigen wird nach Möglichkeit stets in Gegenüberstellung zum Sprechen betrachtet. Dabei wird erstmals zwischen drei unterschiedlichen Formen des kommunikativen Schweigens (Schweigephasen, handlungsbegleitendes Schweigen und Schweigeakte) differenziert, was Auswirkungen hat auf die Beschreibung der Intention, der Funktionsermittlung und der Bedeutungsbeschreibung dieser unterschiedlichen Schweigetypen. Der analytische Teil wendet sich mit Hilfe von gesprächs- bzw. diskursanalytischen Methoden dem Schweigen in unterschiedlichen russischen Textsorten zu (von Alltagsgesprächen über literarische Texte bis hin zu Texten aus den Massenmedien). Bei der Analyse wird zwischen kooperativem und non-kooperativem Schweigen unterschieden.
