Vincent van Gogh s'installe le 20 mai 1890 à Auvers-sur-Oise, et passe les soixante-dix derniers jours de sa vie dans la petite Auberge Ravoux. En deux mois, il peint presque autant de tableaux que Klimt en toute une vie. Ce livre réunit pour la première fois l'ensemble de ses dernières oeuvres, et les met en regard avec les lettres, souvent illustrées, qu'il a écrites à son frère Theo, à sa belle-soeur Johanna, à sa famille et à ses amis. En étudiant de près cette correspondance, ainsi que d'autres documents inédits, Wouter van der Veen met aussi en évidence, pour la première fois, le rôle de Johanna Bonger dans la reconnaissance de l'oeuvre de Van Gogh. Cet ouvrage contient le fac-similé du brouillon d'une lettre à Theo, que Vincent van Gogh portait sur lui le jour de son suicide.
