Information Organization and Databases: Foundations of Data Organization provides recent developments of information organization technologies that have become crucial not only for data mining applications and information visualization, but also for treatment of semistructured data, spatio-temporal data and multimedia data that are not necessarily stored in conventional DBMSs. Foundations of data organization is a relatively new field of research in comparison to, other branches of science. It is close to twenty years old. In this short life span of this branch of computer science, it has spread to all corners of the world, which is reflected in this book. This book covers new database application areas (databases for advanced applications and CAD/VLSI databases), computational geometry, file allocation & distributed databases, database models (including non traditional database models), database machines, query processing & physical structures for relational databases, besides traditional file organization (hashing, index file organization, mathematical file organization and consecutive retrieval property), in order to identify new trends of database research. The papers in this book originally represent talks given at the International Conference on Foundations of Data Organization, which was held on May 21-24, 1985, in Kyoto, Japan. This conference was held at Kyoto University, and sponsored by the organizing committee of the International Conference on Foundations of Data Organization and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The conference was in cooperation with: ACM SIGMOD, IEEE Computer Society, Information Processing Society of Japan, IBM Research, Kyushu University, Kobe University, IBM Japan, Kyoto Sangyo University and Polish Academy of Sciences. This Conference was the follow-up of the first conference, which was hosted by the Polish Academy of Sciences and held at Warsaw in 1981. The Warsaw conference focused mainly on consecutive retrieval property and it's applications.

Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery technology is emerging as a key technology for enterprises that wish to improve their data analysis, decision support activities, and the automatic extraction of knowledge from data. The objective of the Third International Conference on Data Warehousing and Knowledge Discovery (DaWaK 2001) was to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss research issues and experience in developing and deploying data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems, applications, and solutions. The conference focused on the logical and physical design of data warehousing and knowledge discovery systems. The scope of the papers covered the most recent and relevant topics in the areas of association rules, mining temporal patterns, data mining techniques, collaborative filtering, Web mining, visualization, matchmaking, evelopment and maintenance of data warehouses, OLAP, and distributed data warehouses. These proceedings contain the technical papers selected for presentation at the conference. We received more than 90 papers from over 20 countries, and the program committee finally selected 34 papers. The conference program included one invited talk: “Knowledge Management in Heterogeneous Data Warehouse Environments” by Professor Larry Kerschberg, George Mason University, USA.

The objective of the workshops associated with ER 2001, the 20th International Con- rence on Conceptual Modeling, was to give participants the opportunity to present and discuss emerging hot topics, thus adding new perspectives to conceptual modeling. This, the 20th ER conference, the ?rst of the 21st century, was also the ?rst one in Japan. The conference was held on November 27-30, 2001 at Yokohama National University with 192 participants from 31 countries. ER 2001 encompasses the entire spectrum of c- ceptual modeling, from theoretical aspects to implementations, including fundamentals, applications, and software engineering. In particular, ER 2001 emphasized e-business and reengineering. To meet this objective, we selected the following four topics and planned four international workshops: – International Workshop on Conceptual Modeling of Human/Organizational/Social Aspects of Manufacturing Activities (HUMACS 2001) Manufacturing enterprises have to confront a host of demands. The competitive climate, enhanced by communication and knowledge sharing, will require incr- singly rapid responses to market forces. Customer demands for higher quality, better services, and lower cost will force manufacturers to reach new levels of ?exibility and adaptability. Sophisticated customers will demand products customized to meet their needs. Industries have so far sought to cope with these challenges primarily through advances in traditional capital by installing more powerful hardware and software technology. Attention to the role of humans combined with organizational and social schemes in manufacturing has only been marginal. The workshop HUMACS 2001 aimed to challenge the relevance of this last point.
