2020 도쿄 올림픽 준비 기간인 2014년 발표한 이 소설은 한 노숙자의 삶과 죽음을 통해 일본 사회의 부끄러운 면을 정면으로 고발한 소설이다. 출간된 이후 일본 국내의 불편한 시선을 감내해야 했지만 영어로 번역되어 제71회 전미도서상을 수상하며 다시 주목받는다. 2021년 현재 일본에서만 판매 누계 43만 부를 돌파하며 역주행 베스트셀러로 자리 잡았다. 우에노공원의 늙은 노숙자인 ‘가즈’를 주인공으로 1964년의 도쿄 올림픽과 2020년의 두 번째 도쿄 올림픽을 잇는다. 태어날 때부터 짊어져야 했던 가난, 첫 번째 도쿄 올림픽 공사현장에서 돈을 벌어 가정을 꾸린 그는 다른 사람처럼 열심히 그리고 평범하게 살았다. 하지만 그에게 삶은 비극의 연속이다. 타지에서 갑작스럽게 죽음을 맞은 아들에 이어 부인 역시 급사하는데, 이후 홀로 남은 자신을 걱정하는 손녀에게 부담을 주기 싫었던 그는 도쿄로 올라가 노숙자가 되는 길을 택한다. 빛과 소리가 가득한 도쿄의 한구석에서 고독하고 쓸쓸하게 저물어가는 노숙자들. 그들은 눈에 보이지만 기억에 남지 않고, 눈에서 사라지면 쉽게 잊히는 유령과도 같은 존재이다. 모두에게 개방된 우에노공원이지만 언제고 타인의 필요에 따라 자리를 비켜줘야 하는 노숙자. 동일본 대지진의 가장 큰 피해자이지만 방사능 오염을 이유로 모든 곳에서 거절당하는 후쿠시마현 이재민. 일본에서 나고 자랐지만 국적이 다르다는 이유로 끝까지 받아들여지지 않는 재일한국인. 유미리는 일본 사회에 만연한 혐오와 차별의 기저에 자신들은 결코 그런 상황에 처하지 않을 거란 믿음과 자신감이 있기 때문이란 점을 신랄하게 꼬집는다.
