Meine Meinung: Mit Auf Umwegen ist das erste Königskinderbuch dieser neuen Generation bei mir eingezogen und ich war sehr gespannt es zu lesen, denn es wurde mir von der Redaktion wärmstens empfohlen (vielen Dank, liebes Königskinder-Team!). Was soll ich sagen? Sie hatten Recht und liegen goldrichtig, wenn sie der Meinung waren, dass mir dieses Buch gefällt, denn das hat es. Auf Umwegen ist vom Autor Andrew Smith. Der ist euch vielleicht daher bekannt, dass er Winger geschrieben hat. Dieses Buch von ihm habe ich selbst noch nicht gelesen aber man hört so viel gutes, dass Auf Umwegen auch nur gut sein kann.
Was direkt auffällt ist der besondere Schreibstil des Autors oder man könnte auch sagen, die eigenartige Weise, wie Finn, der Protagonist des Buches, denkt, fühlt und erzählt. Er berechnet Zeit nicht in Sekunden, nein, in Meilen und auch sonst hat er diese besondere Art zu denken, mit der er mein Herz im Sturm erobert hat. Eine Sekunde. Die war es, die sein Leben verändert hat. Finn würde nicht eine Sekunde sagen sondern 100 Meilen seitwärts aber das ist auch okay. Im Endeffekt ist es dasselbe denn mit einem Mal hat sich Finns Leben für immer verändert. Seine Mutter stirbt und er, an der Wirbelsäule schwer verletzt, wird Epileptiker. Und das verändert sein ganzes Leben und auch die Sicht auf die Dinge. Ein bisschen selbstbemitleidend ist er ja schon aber irgendwie kann man das auch verstehen. Doch all das ändert sich, als Julia auftaucht und er sich in sie verliebt. 
Damit beginnt eine Geschichte, in der eigentlich gar nicht allzu viel passiert, die jedoch so viel transportiert. All die kleinen Lebensweisheiten, von denen ein Junge erzählt und die mich zutiefst beeindruckt haben. Wir lernen, was die Liebe mit uns anstellen kann und zu welchen Taten wir fähig sind, was unser Körper, egal wie gesund oder krank er ist, so alles erreichen kann. Auf Umwegen erzählt aber nicht die Geschichte von Finn, Julia und Cade, nein, es erzählt irgendwie auch die Geschichte von Finn, der nur einmal in seinem Leben nicht Finn sein will. Denn das Buch seines Vaters, in dem er doch irgendwie die Hauptfigur ist, verfolgt ihn auf Schritt und Tritt.
Auf Umwegen ist eine Sammlung von vielen unterschiedlichen Charakteren, die sich leicht einen Platz unter meinen liebsten erkämpfen könnten. Besonders Finn, Cade und Julia sind so einzigartig und verkörpern so viel und erzählen allein dadurch, wer sie sind eine ganz eigene Geschichte. Selbst Laika, Finns Hund erschien während dem Lesen so detailgetreu vor meinem Auge, dass ich den Autor dafür nur loben kann. 
Dieses Buch hat den Titel Buch aus dem Königskinder Verlag mehr als verdient, was in diesem Buch transportiert wird, ist nicht nur die Geschichte an sich sondern auch viele kleine Dinge, die man gar nicht so wirklich benennen kann aber noch sehr lange mit sich im Herzen herum trägt. 
Bewertung: Auf Umwegen konnte mich in jeder Hinsicht überzeugen und ist für mich ein ganz besonderes Buch, das viel mehr transportiert, als man auf den ersten Blick dnekt. Mit seiner wundervollen Schreib- und Ausdrucksweise hat sich Andrew Smith direkt in mein Herz geschrieben und ich gebe allerliebste 5 von 5 Füchschen.

Finn Easton, with his heterochromatic eyes, epilepsy, and penchant for marking time not with seconds but with miles, is one of the best characters of Young Adult literature in 2014. I smell Printz honor bait here.

Struggling to be "fine" is hard when you suffer from seizures caused by a horse carcass that fell on you and killed your mother when you were just a kid, and especially when your father basically stole your very self - eyes, scars, and name - to write a bestselling novel. Finn does a good job portraying fine, especially since his best friend Cade Hernandez is such a god. Cade's nickname isn't Win Win for nothing.

But, Finn's veneer begins to crack as a series of events show him that maybe fine isn't enough. Can Finn get out of his father's book and come into his own? 

Quirky, vulgar in the best possible way, and so poignant, 100 Sideways Miles is the best YA novel I've read this year.

I pretty much skimmed the last 100-75 pages of this book. There wasn't much that was keeping me interested, and even in the end, nothing really tied together.

I went into this book not really expecting anything out of it - I was just curious to read something by Andrew Smith, since everyone talks about how weirf his books are. I ended up really enjoying both the writing style and the plot of the story.

Finn is a regular guy. Except that a horse fell from te sky on him and his mum when he was young and now he has epilepsy. Also his dad wrote a book about aliens and he can't help but feel like he is trapped in it. Things get a little better when he meets Julia, the new girl at his school and the two develop a sweet, and slightly awkward relationship.

I thought the characters were very interesting - yes a lot of the things sound super weird, but they actually feel normal enough as you read them. Only a couple of things bothered me about the characters. First, Finn keeps having blank out episodes and those really bother him and are actually kind of dangerous. His dad and stepmum are super worried. Soo, why isn't he taking medication? There are absolutely no reason why he shouldn't and no background information on a possible reason (like a bad reaction or something).

Another thing that bothered me was Cade, Finn's best friend. Not him per se, but the fact that there's a girl paying to give him handjobs. That was just ridiculous. I also wasn’t too crazy about any of his female characters - they aren’t very developed in the story beyond their relationships with the male characters, but I can excuse that, given the fact that the book pretty much centers around the character of Finn anyway.

Other than those things I really liked the story - mostly because Smith's writing style is very relatable and quirky. It has really won me over and I’m ready to read more of his books!
