came for the hype, stayed for the political drama. it's beauty &amp; the beast meets twilight. the romance scenes were cringey but the history of the lands, the politics and war, the "is he or isn't he" was enough to keep me hooked.

it started of well but then I was getting really irritated by the FL "faeyre?' so then I went and looked up the title on tiktok to find out that Tamlin isn't the ML and Rhysand is when they are both horrible, abusive and major red flags so then I got kinda bummed and had to force myself to finish it the FL is annoying asf like she NEVER listens and thinks shes top shit so she does whatever she wants. AND I HATE stories where the FL suddenly becomes the chosen one which in this series she clearly is ALSO I want to keep reading BUT wdym in the next few books tamlin becomes the villain, there is a story about her abusive sisters and they're love stories as well as wdym she ends up with sociopath rhysand anyways overall MEH and waste of my time tbh

Found it kinda boring but I am currently reading the second book and its a lot better.

2.4 stars I have to be honest . . . this book was hard to get through. It seemed like there was no plot for the first half of the book, then we did a 180 degree turn and suddenly, we're heading Under the Mountain and the action begins. Lucien had to be my fave character here. Feyre pissed me off on multiple occasions, and so did Tamlin. Alis remains to be a queen as usual. I actually really like Nesta, despite popular opinion. Tamlin doesn't connect with the people of his Court very much, which is concerning considering how he rules them. Rhys PISSED ME OFF. Both Tamlin and Rhys were abusive here. I HATED how Rhys made Feyre dress. It dehumanized her to simply a body, then he DRUGGED her. I- ALSO, when he grabbed her bone and twisted . . . I actually was seeing red. I wanted to scratch and claw at him. Amarantha was brutal. Anywho, Feyre had some badass moments here that salvaged the book but other than that, it was an okay read.

I forget how much I loved this book no wonder I used to love reading a few years ago, it was so adictive and funny and heart breaking but cool I cannot wait to pick up the second one. 

Feyre is that typical selfless heroine who wants only good to come out of her actions and although she can be frightfully stubborn, she's still fantastic.

When I started reading the book, it reminded me of "Beauty and the Beast", due to the lost fortune, the Faeries, and the fact Feyre had to leave her family. Honestly, I didn't know it was based on other lores, but that aside... I didn't initially connect to Feyre as much as I would've though. Surely, I liked the fact she was a hunter, and the story had their own twists and turns, but I couldn't feel. However, the fact she liked to paint made me a little bit more interested, due to the hidden dimension of her; the awe when she had her own studio and how she mentioned how to paint everything. Speaking of which, the writing was really good... "The full force of that wild, unrelenting High Lord's power focused solely on me--and I felt the storm contained beneath his skin, so capable of sweeping away everything I was, even in its lessened state, but I could trust him, trust myself to weather that mighty power. I could throw all that I was at him and he wouldn't balk." (247) "The sun filled the clouds with magenta and purple, and its orange-gold rays blended with my path to for a band of shimmering metal. I wanted to fade into it, wanted the light of that sun to burn me away, to fill me with such joy that I would become a ray of sunshine myself. This wasn't music to dance to--it was music to worship, music to fill in the gaps of my soul, to bring me to a place where there was no pain." (374) The entire climax and ending was really great, and the best part of the book. The feelings Feyre had, the intensity of the moment...it all came together wonderfully. I felt immersed to that part so much. And I would now want to read the sequel.

I’m sooooooo disappointed by this book - I really thought I would like this series which is why I bought ALL FIVE BOOKS 😂😂😂 I bought them ahead of time together so that they were cheaper. The main character is super annoying and would literally give her life for this man she basically just met - ew. The author starts to use the word “naught” a lot, and “save for” instead of “except”… like why are you so attached to these words. The main character also has a weird hidden talent for painting?? so random and doesn’t tie in well with anything else in the book, but she references her paintings like… A LOT. can’t believe I’m going to have to read at least two more of these rip. I will say that if the author had written these more in like a harry potter style then the plot could actually have potential.

I wanted to like this book. I really did. Feyre is a seemingly strong, Katniss character. She hunts, feeds her family, does business at the market. Yet, she only does this because she is bound to a promise by her dead mother. Her sisters are ungrateful and useless, her father is damaged/incapable of running the household. Feyre does everything. One of her sisters is too stuck-up to help out, and the other is too childish. Feyre does nothing to correct them. Fine, I get it- she still loves them even if they're lowkey abusive. After a series of events, she's whisked away to the home of a High Fae, which she's supposed to be grateful for because it was either that or death. Initially, she wants to go back but she soon realizes that the only place she is safe is with Tamlin, the handsome faerie cursed with a masked face. Naturally, their attraction for each other grows. Feyre keeps doing risky things, like sneaking out during a faerie festival and going out into the woods, where all sorts of monsters lurk. At this point I could hardly stand Feyre. She just wanted attention. Where was my tough, strong huntress? She was replaced by a weak romantic who couldn't resist the pull of the beat of the drums, of the faerie illusions, etc. I'll admit, I'm picky about the books I read. If a character does something I remotely don't like, it's over. Maybe I'm having a bad day and the character is too happy-go-lucky. Maybe I stopped believing in love a long time ago and I can't stand it when the character says [spoilers removed]. Because that's what happened. And I stopped reading after that. Feyre. I expected so much of you. And I get that you're sexually frustrated and feel trapped and just want someone to love you, but PLEASE. DO something instead of letting the faeries pull you this way and that. EDIT: 2023 I started reading this book again before trying the Thorn of Glass series this year and found the main character so annoying... then I looked it up and realized I had written a review 7 years prior with equal annoyance. Not reading Sarah J. Maas ever again...

I was searching an easy, light read after “I who have never known men”. This is the blueprint, most generic self-insert fantasy ever. I almost DNF-ed when the main character was revealed to be the chosen one who would literally break a magic curse if she had told the male lead “I love you”. Of course, only Feyre can save this immensely powerful High Lord. I didn’t find their romance very compelling, to the point where Feyre would break every bone in her body for Tamlin. I’m sure Tamlin is hot but every character just felt very flat. Alis as the deux ex machina lore dropper, Lucien as the sarcastic witty bodyguard bestie and Rhys as your dangerous baddie. I see why people like this series but I need better fantasy recommendations.

Extremely good world building. I like how Feyre went from being a cool hunter to a dumbass to being cool again. I like the characters there is a good range of good and evil and all the characters are thought through and have good stories. There were some good plot twists although the ending was a little bit too obvious for me.

Wow! I had heard of this book ages ago, and when I got it, I couldn’t wait to read it, yet it was on my shelf for two or more whole years - it did not disappoint! I loved the world building and the fantasy aspects of the book! The story was also very well written - from a lot of suspense about the secrets of this new world, to twists and turns and to the reveals near the end. I’m hoping to hear more about some of the things from future parts, as I felt there are a few things we don’t know yet!
