A Girl from Nowhere

A Girl from Nowhere

James Maxwell2020
Surrounded by fire, a girl with mysterious powers and a young warrior search for safety. Life in the wasteland is a constant struggle. No one knows it better than Taimin. Crippled, and with only his indomitable aunt to protect him, Taimin must learn to survive in a world scorched by two suns and frequented by raiders. But when Taimin discovers his homestead ransacked and his aunt killed, he sets off with one mission: to seek revenge against those who stole everything. With nowhere to call home, his hunt soon takes a turn when he meets a mystic, Selena, who convinces him to join her search for the fabled white city. Taimin and Selena both need refuge, and the white city is a place where Taimin may find someone to heal his childhood injury. As they avoid relentless danger, Taimin and Selena attempt to reach the one place that promises salvation. And they can only hope that the city is the haven they need it to be...

Put it down after chapter 2, I refuse to waste my time on ableist backstory. I'm sure these themes get challenged eventually as the protagonist develops but I was unwilling to trudge through the upsetting language of the story to get there. There's a way to implement serious injuries into a story without leaning on disability and being "crippled" for plot. Unfortunately, this author missed the mark in my opinion.

Full review on AIC Stories at: https://aicpod.com/2022/02/01/james-m... It’s not a bad book at all, I actually really enjoyed the ride while I was on it. But as soon as it was over I also had no desire to jump on the next train and tackle the next book in the series. At least not yet. Maybe someday. The biggest thing about this book is that, while the story is fun and the characters are well done, they don’t feel terribly original. To me, I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and fast romp through a new fantasy world without having to make a big commitment to a HUGE fantasy series such as Shannara or The Wheel of Time. Bottom line, it was enjoyable while I was reading it, but there wasn’t much that REALLY hung around in my mind after it was done.
