A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

at first i thought the voice, the snark, the bluntness was hilarious. but the stream of consciousness writing was hard for me follow, i hated the characters (also didnt think they were well developed) and i was thrown by the constant use of slurs. i get it was written yrs ago but we really dont need to say the r word all the time. i dnf this bc i left it at the hospital and also bc it was insufferable

I nearly put this thing down because the first twenty/thirty pages were unbearably [and rightfully so] depressing. I'm glad I stuck it out though, because Dave Eggers makes me laugh out loud like a crazy person, or resist the welling up of tears, or glance around in shame because I agree, I've felt that way, too. Awesome.

A heartbreaking work of staggering genius

A blatantly honest portrait of the selfishness and pride in all of us. Funny and sad.

This was an interesting book. I liked it, but it tried a bit too hard at times to be profound. Still a fun and insightful book.

"I think this book is kind of malleable. I've never really wanted to put it away and be done with it forever -- the second I first 'finished' it, I wanted to dig back in and change everything around. So I'm looking forward to getting back into the text, and straightening and focusing and deleting. Most of all, I'm thrilled that Vintage will be letting me include all the cool chase scenes, previously censored." -- Dave Eggers The literary sensation of the year, a book that redefines both family and narrative for the twenty-first century. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is the moving memoir of a college senior who, in the space of five weeks, loses both of his parents to cancer and inherits his seven-year-old brother.
