Another Dear America in the books! I really enjoyed the setting development in this one, but the characters felt a little lacking to me. Not quite sure why? Maybe because the last Dear America I read, With the Might of Angels, had such three-dimensional characters. 

Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this one! Like I said the setting felt supremely real. And I did like the extra work the author put into writing in the old English style that they would have spoken back then. That definitely gave it a special feeling of authenticity. 

I was surprised by how graphic this one was! Used to be Seeds of Hope was the most graphic Dear American I’d ever read, but this one way surpased it. The author didn’t at all shy away from describing the most gruesome parts of war in the 18th century. There were several descriptive scenes of amputations, disease, and executions by hanging. I’m reminded that even though I view Dear America as a children’s book series, they really don’t mess around and could easily be for young adults. 

Also, it was cool to read and finish this book right around July 4th because the book ended with the characters celebrating the second anniversary of Independence Day on July 4, 1778. Definitely a good summer read, despite the fact that “winter” is in the title of the book!
