George R. R. Martin

A century before A GAME OF THRONES, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros... A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R.R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

"Might be that's so, but if we start cutting off the heads of all the fools and liars, half the towns in the Seven Kingdoms will be empty."

"Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin's ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire. These never-before-collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness. Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals--in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg--whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two... as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits" -- Dust jacket flap.

I love George, I need more, I’m so excited for the show, but god I wish there was a single woman with anything going on other than a man.

It was interesting, but not as good as I hoped.

A great book to read if you're still going through the post Game of Thrones Season 8 hangover. The book is set a hundred years prior to Robert's rebellion and contains three tales of a hedge knight Dunk, and his squire Egg. As they travel from one place to another, they meet lords and kings, take part in tourneys, attend weddings and share brief moments of love and friendship. The stories are classic George RR Martin - unpredictable, well-fleshed out and wonderfully adequate. Read if you want to know a little more about the Targaryens and about Westeros in general.

This was a fun read. I loved all 3 stories and it was good to be back in Westeros for the first time in a while learning about some of the characters from previous times mentioned in the main A Song of Ice and Fire series.

I loved the friendship between Dunk and Egg and all the mishaps and adventures they got themselves into. Egg’s devotion to Dunk was really quite sweet too, and I found they treated each other almost like brothers. The illustrations also added to the book nicely and really captured the story well!

I have a lot of respect for GRRM for building this whole world and history, like wow, I care more about this than I do real world history!

Side note: it’d be nice if this book had the relevant part of the Targaryen family tree printed somewhere as there are a lot of Targaryens and I had to keep referring back to The World of Ice and Fire to clarify who was who 😂

This was a fun, distracting read while I patiently await the next Song of Ice and Fire installment. It was rather enjoyable for two big reasons. First, Dunk is just adorable and the kind of character you just want to cheer on. Second, my insides weren't getting twisted at every turn with some intrigue or another. I mean, I love that stuff, but sometimes it's nice to just read something light and fun. I would definitely recommend it!
