Jessie Tu's writing of an immigrant Australian girl who once was a child prodigy really spoke to me as a first daughter in an Asian family. The pain communicated in the book felt visceral at times, and it cut deeper than I expected. The writing is jagged, but compelling, and at times unnerving. I found the ending unsatisfying, but I found it somewhat refreshing for a book by an Asian woman about an Asian woman to not pander to the usual model minority narratives.
