If you like Sarah J Maas, Leigh Bardugo, and the Three Dark Queens series by Kendare Blake, then I think you will like this book. However, I am very over that niche in YA lit. I was happy to see a black protagonist doing bad-ass magic, but I just lost interest in the book about 75% through. I'm also not a super big fan of pitting sister against each other (I'm obviously in the minority because there are a growing number of books like this) in a deathmatch. Color me prim *shrug*. 

I would definitely recommend to teens who like these types of books though.

A really well developed and interesting story. One of the things I loved the most about this book was the magical system and the way it was described and experienced by the characters. The Magic was visual and musical and sensitive! I think the only reason it didn't get a higher rating is because I didn't connect to the characters. Which is okay, it will not happen with every book. Plus, this isn't saying that the characters were bad! They were actually very interesting. And I will give my body to protect Bacca at all costs. The main character was flawed and I would not act as she did in many situations, but her actions still made sense. Everyone felt complex and important to the story. A great start to a very cool fantasy story
