Possibly when the professor insisted a little too emphatically upon the inferiority of women, he was concerned not with their inferiority, but with his own superiority. That was what he was protecting rather hot-headedly and with too much emphasis, because it was a jewel to him of the rarest price. Life for both sexes—and I looked at them, shouldering their way along the pavement—is arduous, difficult, a perpetual struggle. It calls for gigantic courage and strength. More than anything, perhaps, creatures of illusion as we are, it calls for confidence in oneself. Without self-confidence we are as babes in the cradle. And how can we generate this imponderable quality, which is yet so invaluable, most quickly? By thinking that other people are inferior to one self.

The whole structure, therefore, of the early nineteenth-century novel was raised, if one was a woman, by a mind which was slightly pulled from the straight, and made to alter its clear vision in deference to external authority. One has only to skim those old forgotten novels and listen to the tone of voice in which they are written to divine that the writer was meeting criticism; she was saying this by way of aggression, or that by way of conciliation. She was admitting that she was 'only a woman', or protesting that she was 'as good as a man'. She met that criticism as her temperament dictated, with docility and diffidence, or with anger and emphasis. It does not matter which it was; she was thinking of something other than the thing itself. Down comes her book upon our heads. There was a flaw in the centre of it. And I thought of all the women's novels that lie scattered, like small pock-marked apples in an orchard, about the second-hand book shops of London. It was the flaw in the centre that had rotted them. She had altered her values in deference to the opinion of others.

On the contrary, she was snubbed, slapped, lectured and exhorted. Her mind must have been strained and her vitality lowered by the need of opposing this, of disproving that. For here again we come within range of that very interesting and obscure masculine complex which has had so much influence upon the woman's movement; that deep-seated desire, not so much that 

 shall be superior, which plants him wherever one looks, not only in front of the arts, but barring the way to politics too, even when the risk to himself seems infinitesimal and the suppliant humble and devoted.

truly a remarkable author woolf is. every sentence feels like a breath of fresh air, drawing me deep into her soul of poetry that lies within her heart, waiting to seep out slowly through her manifestation as a reader. truly in awe of her.

a room of one's own is truly the heart of her works. don't think i will ever come across a book that talks about a woman's writing and the central topic of womanhood the way she does. her mind is fascinating to read into. the way it all ties together at the end, her manifestations, her hopes. this book made me feel like i was in a drafty university dining hall in the late 1920s listening to her thoughts. such a warm welcome to the mind of her own. almost feels like she's inviting us to figure out the puzzlement of a woman's creativity alongside her.

three guineas on the other hand felt loud, it felt angry. such a stark contrast to a room of one's own. which makes so much sense as to why this was paired together. it delves into the same topic with different tonations. a room of one's own being calm and gentle, a lecture of how women should approach the tidings of a woman and their story, yet three guineas was angry and urgent, radical almost, and it really strikes me as such a contrasting tonation as a room of one's own was targeted to a woman, and three guineas was targeted towards the men - so fulfilling to read these contrasts. in a world where we are in a continuous circle of war and hatred, reading this highlights the thinking that comes around in today's society and their perception of war. underlined almost the whole book because everything she speaks about just felt so trajectory to the life we live.

a very important read. glad to have come across the most wonderful and incomparable writer that she is.

i feel like rating this text is a disservice? i loved it—parts made me ache and made me feel naked—yet there were some parts that made me feel just how different our sensibilities were at a personal and societal level in regards to our attitudes towards the craft of writing [woolf calls emotions such as 

"hate and fear [...] bitterness and resentment"

 a distraction from "true" (=pure) writing while for me those 

 a reflection of what is real in life]...

regardless of that! this was a text that really underlined and laid bare, in crushing detail, the effect of just how cruel the poverty impeded upon women to assert male dominion is (like i 

, tapi cara woolf menjabarkannya disini dengan gaya penulisannya... A++) and how when confronted with the fact that that superiority was never inherent, that natural supremacy was a fragile illusion, the violence enacted was even fiercer. and this was only concerning 

. no wonder historically—if there are even any—many of the traces left of the craft by women lacked "integrity", as woolf called it, in their form because there was so much reproductive work demanded from women to be done 

in order to keep the productive [men's] world-work 

running; no wonder there were so many pages with fresh ink smudged and hidden from any form of eyes.

i definitely agree with the White Woman myopia criticism though, though i kinda read this knowing already what a woman during her time might say. it's not just that we must be allowed to partake in capitalism to have the money and thus a room of our own; it is that we must dismantle capitalism, imperialism, racism, colonialism, etc etc all in its entirety so that 

(i brought this book a fifth on the way in to Friday Findings and it says something about me that people knew it as one of 

 defining texts of the west's first-wave feminism and i only picked it up because it was

The indifference of the world which [...] other men of genius have found so hard to bear was in her case not indifference but hostility. The world did not say to her as it said to them, Write if you choose; it makes no difference to me. The world said with a guffaw, Write? What's the good of your writing?

Three Guineas - 3.5 Stars

A Room of One's own highlights the perceptions of women in 1929 and from previous years before that. Specifically looking at the perceptions of female fiction writers, and why at this time there were more male writers than female writers. One of my favourite quotes was "Anon, Who Wrote so many Poems without Signing them, was often a Woman". This is because in these times women either wrote under a male name or as an anonymous author. A wonderful insight into a woman's ideas.

Three Guinea's looks at how a patriarchal system and misogyny are the roots behind fascism and the beliefs of war. I felt in comparison to A Room of One's Own this essay fell slightly flat and often felt like it was dragging. However, Woolf brought receipts in order to show how the male population felt about women in this time and it was both amusing and horrifying to read.

However, Woolf's writing style is immaculate I feel as though some people might say that she sound pretentious and some of the over-complicated words were not needed. Yet I feel as though she was trying to prove a point that women can be just as educated as men. And the language that men use to try and mansplain their opinions and what they believe women do not understand can also be used and understood by women. Even though I much preferred the title essay I found Virginia Woolf's writing style my cup of tea and I will definitely pick up some of her fiction.
