A Strangeness In My Mind is a novel Orhan Pamuk has worked on for six years. It is the story of boza seller Mevlut, the woman to whom he wrote three years' worth of love letters, and their life in Istanbul. In the four decades between 1969 and 2012, Mevlut works a number of different jobs on the streets of Istanbul, from selling yoghurt and cooked rice, to guarding a car park. He observes many different kinds of people thronging the streets, he watches most of the city get demolished and re-built, and he sees migrants from Anatolia making a fortune; at the same time, he witnesses all of the transformative moments, political clashes, and military coups that shape the country. He always wonders what it is that separates him from everyone else - the source of that strangeness in his mind. But he never stops selling boza during winter evenings and trying to understand who his beloved really is. What matters more in love: what we wish for, or what our fate has in store? I appreciate the writing style of Orhan during this book. The way the story is told as if all the characters are together in a room telling their version of what really happened. It’s engaging during the first half, however there were some chapters that took me out of the main plot (regarding religion and war). Overall, I liked reading about Mevlut and his nostalgic life in Istanbul.

നോവലിന്റെ ഘടന ആദ്യം കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ഓർമ്മ വന്നത് ബൊലാഞ്ഞോയെ ആണ്. Savage Detectives-ന്റെ രണ്ടാം ഭാഗത്തിൽ വിവിധ കഥാ പാത്രങ്ങൾ വന്ന് അവരുടെ version of the story പറയുന്ന രീതിയാണിവിടെയും. പാമുക് പറയുന്നത് ഇസ്റ്റാംബൂളിന്റെ അര നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ചരിത്രമാണ്. അത് എല്ലാ ലൗകികവിഷയങ്ങളും, ആത്മീയതയും, രാഷ്ട്രീയവും തൊട്ടു പോകുന്നു. ചിലപ്പോൾ Ha Jin-ന്റെ To Live ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ചിലപ്പോൾ പാമുക്കിന്റെ തന്നെ Museum of Innocence-നെയും. എന്നാൽ തികച്ചും വ്യത്യസ്തമായുള്ള കഥയാണ് ഇവിടെ.

ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വന്ന് നഗരത്തോടൊപ്പം വളരുകയും അവിടെ ജീവിക്കാനായി പൊരുതുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ആളുകളുടെ പ്രതിനിധിയായായ മേവ്ലൂതിന്റെ ജീവിത ചിത്രം പാമുക് വരക്കുന്നത് സ്ഥിരമുള്ള പതിഞ്ഞ ഹാസ്യത്തിന്റെ അകന്പടിയോടെ, ചെറിയൊരു ഡിറ്റാച്ചുമെന്റോടുകൂടിയാണ്. എന്തൊരു ലാളിത്യമുള്ള ശൈലിയാണ് പാമുക്കിന്റെത്. പരിഭാഷയുടെ മികവ് കൂടിയായിരിക്കണം. കണ്ണാടി പോലുള്ള ഭാഷ ചിലപ്പോൾ കഥ പറച്ചിലിനെ പിറകോട്ടു വലിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട് - അതി ദീർഘമാണ് നോവൽ. കൂടാതെ ചിലയിടത്തെങ്കിലും ഒരു വരി മിസ്സായാൽ നിങ്ങൾ കഥാഗതിയിലെ ഒരു പ്രധാന സംഭവം വിട്ടുപോയേക്കും (ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ചില ഭാഗങ്ങൾ "മ്യൂസിയ"ത്തെ ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കും). ചില പെർസ്പെക്റ്റീവ് സ്വിച്ച് ഒക്കെ അനാവശ്യമായിത്തോന്നും. എന്നാലും കഥയുടെ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സൽ അപ്പീൽ അനന്യമാണ്‌. ബോസ എന്ന ട്രഡീഷണൽ ഡ്രിങ്ക് വിൽക്കുന്നതാണ് നായകൻറെ തൊഴിൽ , അച്ഛനെ സഹായിക്കാനാണ് അയാൾ ആദ്യമായി നഗരത്തിലെത്തുന്നത്. അമ്പത് വർഷങ്ങൾക്കിപ്പുറം,അയാൾ കഥ തീരുന്പോഴും അതേ ജോലിയിൽ തന്നെ തുടരുന്നു. ബോസ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്നത് പാരമ്പര്യത്തെയാണ് - സമർത്ഥമായി ഇസ്താൻബൂളിന്റെ മോഡെർണിറ്റി Vs ട്രഡിഷൻ ഏറ്റുമുട്ടലുകളെക്കുറിച്ചു പാമുക്ക് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ആ സ്ട്രഗിൾ ഇന്നും തുടരുന്നു, ഒരു പക്ഷെ മറ്റൊരു നഗരത്തിലും ഇല്ലാത്തതു പോലെ. മേവ്ലൂത് എന്ന നായകൻ ചിന്തിക്കുകയാണ് - നഗരം എന്റെ ഉള്ളിലാണോ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നത്? അതോ താൻ അതിന്റെ ഉള്ളിലാണോ? നഗരത്തിന്റെ രാത്രികളെ അയാൾ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു, അരനൂറ്റാണ്ടോളം അയാൾ അതിൽ അലഞ്ഞു നടന്നു. തന്റെ തന്നെ ചിന്തകളുടെ പ്രോജെക്ഷൻ ആണോ ഈ രാത്രികൾ, വെളിച്ചങ്ങൾ, ഇരുളിൽ പതുങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന ദുഷ്ടത, എല്ലാം, അയാൾ ആലോചിക്കുകയാണ്. അയാളെ മുന്നോട്ടു നയിക്കുന്നത് ശുഭാപ്തി വിശ്വാസമാണ്. അയാളുടെ സത്യസന്ധതയും അയാളിൽ നിറഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്ന സ്നേഹവും അയാളെ ഒരേ സമയം തകർക്കുകയും നിലനിർത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. 

സമ്മിശ്ര വികാരങ്ങളോടെയാണ് ഞാൻ നോവൽ വായിച്ചത്. ഒരു കുഗ്രാമത്തിൽ നിന്ന് നഗരത്തിലെത്തുകയും എന്നാൽ അവിടത്തെ പൽച്ചക്രങ്ങളുടെ തിരിച്ചിലിൽ പെട്ട് പോകാതിരിക്കാൻ പാടുപെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന മേവ്ലൂത് അന്യനായിത്തോന്നുന്നില്ല എന്നത് എന്നെ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുത്തി. കൂടെ കൊണ്ട് വന്ന, കുടഞ്ഞു കളയാൻ കഴിയാത്ത എന്തോ ഒന്ന് മേലൊട്ടി നിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ട് ഇപ്പോഴും. തന്റേതായ രീതിയിൽ, തന്റെ വാല്യൂ സിസ്റ്റത്തിന് അനുസരിച്ചു ജീവിക്കുക എന്നത് എന്തൊരു പ്രയാസമേറിയ കാര്യമാണ് ഈ ലോകത്തിൽ. അയാളുടെ വഴികളിൽ പലതും പരിചിതം എന്ന് തന്നെ തോന്നി. നമ്മുടെ/നമ്മൾ ഭാഗമായി മാറുന്ന നഗരം. നഗരത്തെ/ജീവിതത്തെ നാം പ്രൊജക്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുകയാണോ അതോ അവ നമ്മളെ പ്രൊജക്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുകയാണോ എന്ന ചിന്ത.To Live എന്നെ ഒരു കാലത്ത് വല്ലാതെ ഉലച്ച നോവലായിരുന്നു, അതിനു ശേഷം ഇപ്പോഴാണ് അത്തരം ഒരനുഭവം. ആ കാര്യത്തിൽ പാമുക്കിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടനോവലായിരിക്കും ഇതെനിക്ക്. എന്നാൽ വികാരം ഒഴിച്ച് നിറുത്തിയാൽ അയാളുടെ Snow (അത് തന്നെ ബെസ്റ്റ്), Museum തുടങ്ങിയവക്ക് പിന്നിലാണ് ഇതിന്റെ സ്ഥാനം. എന്നാൽ നിങ്ങൾ ഇത് വരെ പാമുക്കിനെ വായിക്കാത്ത ആളാണെങ്കിൽ നിങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങേണ്ടത് ഇവിടെ നിന്നാണ് എന്നാണ് എന്റെ അഭിപ്രായം. 
 
പത്തു വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുന്നെയാണ് പാമുക്കിന്റെ Snow വായിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ കാലയളവിൽ നാല് നോവലിസ്റ്റുകളാണ് എന്നെ മോഹിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത് - പാമുക്, ബൊലാഞ്ഞോ , സെബാൾഡ് , പിന്നെ നോസ്‌ഗാർഡ്‌. ബോലാഞ്ഞോയുടെ savage ആണ് ഞാൻ ആദ്യം തുടങ്ങാൻ റെക്കമെന്റ് ചെയ്യാറ്. സെബാൾഡിന്റെ Emigrants. നൊസ്‌ഗാർഡിന്റേതിൽ മൈ സ്ട്രഗിൾ ബുക്ക് വൺ. പാമുക്കിനും ഒരു കിളി വാതിലായി. എന്നാൽ നോവലിന്റെ ദൈർഘ്യവും പതിഞ്ഞ വേഗതയും പലരെയും പിൻവാങ്ങാൻ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചേക്കാം.

This book is not Pamuk’s magnum opus. However, I enjoyed its different style (a mixture of third person narration and interview-like interruptions of almost all characters) and historical background which I think it’s especially interesting for non-Turkish or new generation Turkish readers.

I recommend it to Pamuk readers and anyone who wants to learn how İstanbul’s façade changed from 60s to 2010s from a street vendor’s gaze. As he walks, walks, walks you will plunge into your thoughts like he does.
