A Winter Haunting

Dan Simmons2002
A once-respected college professor and novelist, Dale Stewart has sabotaged his career and his marriage -- and now darkness is closing in on him. In the last hours of Halloween he has returned to the dying town of Elm Haven, his boyhood home, where he hopes to find peace in isolation. But moving into a long-deserted farmhouse on the far outskirts of town -- the one-time residence of a strange and brilliant friend who lost his young life in a grisly "accident" back in the terrible summer of 1960 -- is only the latest in his long succession of recent mistakes. This book was available on Audible Plus. I was a little curious about it, so I started listening one day while I had a lot of things to do that didn't require much thinking. I was a Dan Simmons fan for a while. I'm not now. But I'll grant you that this sort of ghost story works pretty well, for the most part. There were annoying bits, but it held my attention throughout the day it took me to listen to it. My SFF book club read Summer of Night last October. This book follows one (or two?) of the characters from that story, 40 years later. The protagonist is fairly annoying, but he's under a lot of supernatural pressure. I didn't hate it, except in spots. As a ghost story, it wasn't too bad.
