The incredible feats of Hannibal, the punic general crossing the Alps with elephants, might be known to many, but I personally didn't know much else what happened during that time or the prelude / aftermath. Until I read this lovely book.

The writing style, as it is similar to his other books, is a lively and page turning retelling of history by Mr. Goldsworthy. 

It is mainly focused on the military events - and that's the purpose of the author as he points out early on. 

Nevertheless, I wished there would have been a bit more information about the economicical and public impact of the punic wars on the state and population. There are bits and pieces here and there and a very interesting last chapter which is covering some of this.
