Prometeo Encadenado es una vasta representación de la corrupción, el rencor y la venganza de Zeus porque Prometeo les otorga a los humanos el fuego. Siguiendo el mito de Prometeo y Epimeteo, el segundo le atribuye características positivas a los animales, pero cuando es el turno de los humanos, ya no queda nada.

Así pues, Prometeo les enseña artes, letras y les brinda conocimiento. Zeus se enoja, ¿por qué? Porque les tiene miedo. Zeus sabe, más allá del hecho de que Prometeo robó el fuego de los dioses, que los humanos pueden ser peligrosos. Prometeo es amigo de la humanidad y ve que el hombre tiene cierta necesidad, de salir de su ceguera y su ignorancia. Sin remordimiento y sin importarle las consecuencias de sus actos, él decide robar el fuego e iluminar a los humanos. No fue sólo su desobediencia y rebeldía, sino su visión de sí mismo en los hombres lo que lo llevó a cometer tales actos; el castigo fue su destino. Zeus es un tirano que tiende a castigar a los mortales que lo desobedecen, como es el caso de Ío, y también a los dioses, gigantes y titanes, como se relata a lo largo de la obra.

Hefesto está muy en contra de su labor, pues no quiere atar a un titán a una roca, pero es una tarea que Zeus le encomendó, así que debe cumplirla si no quiere sufrir su ira.

Considero que Esquilo expuso de forma concreta la tiranía, la venganza, la ira, el rencor y el dolor del castigo. Aun así, Prometeo se niega a revelar quién destronará a Zeus; quién será la causa de su propia ruina, tal y como él y sus hermanos, Poseidón y Hades, derrotaron a Cronos. Muestra una caída de la gracia al desastre y castigo. Prometeo es poderoso y ve el futuro también, a comparación de su hermano Epimeteo, y sabe que su castigo es perpetuo, ya que no puede morir. Sin embargo, acepta su destino cruel, sin arrepentirse de haberles brindado a los humanos una semilla de conocimiento.

Well, I successfully read a whole play by Aeschylus in Greek and lived to tell the tale.

Aeschylus' grammar was less difficult than I thought it would be, but man - I do not know the vocabulary at all! I felt like I had to turn to the LSJ every other word in some passages.

My reading of the play is not sympathetic to Prometheus. He is punished for abandoning his own (twice): first, he abandons the Titans, then all the immortals. And rather than take the opportunities to apologize or make amends (via Oceanus or Hermes), he reaffirms his status as an enemy to the gods, upon whom he wishes all kinds of nastiness. Why wouldn't Zeus punish him and leave him chained up?

The thing I do not understand is why the Chorus sticks with him at the end.

In Prometheus Bound the defiant Titan Prometheus is brutally punished by Zeus for daring to improve the state of wretchedness and servitude in which mankind is kept. The Suppliants tells the story of the fifty daughters of Danaus who must flee to escape enforced marriages, while Seven Against Thebes shows the inexorable downfall of the last members of the cursed family of Oedipus. And The Persians, the only Greek tragedy to deal with events from recent Athenian history, depicts the aftermath of the defeat of Persia in the battle of Salamis, with a sympathetic portrayal of its disgraced King Xerxes. Philip Vellacott's evocative translation is accompanied by an introduction, with individual discussions of the plays, and their sources in history and mythology.
