Elephants Can Remember (Hercule Poirot Mysteries)

Sarah Sammis

Two stars because I don't remember the details.

Hercule Poirot stood on the clifftop. Here, many years earlier, there had been a fatal accident. This was followed by the grisly discovery of two bodies—a husband and wife who had been shot dead. But who had killed whom? Was it a suicide pact? A crime of passion? Or cold-blooded murder? Poirot delves into the past and discovers that “old sins leave long shadows.”

Perhaps Dame Agatha was getting tired by the end of her career, but this one was way too easy to solve. The finale was also sort of melodramatic and silly. Nevertheless, Elephants Can Remember was a cozy little read to pair with a glass of Rosé. I can’t believe I only have one more novel to go before I get to say au revoir to Poirot!

I love Agatha Christie (and especially Poirot) because despite the fact that we are given all of the clues, I can rarely actually figure out the solution. However, with Elephants Can Remember, this just isn't true.

Poirot has phone conversations, the facts of which we are not privvy to (a big pet peeve of mine in mysteries - a solution isn't clever if the reader isn't given all the facts). However, even with this hiding of information, the solution was so painfully obvious that I had it solved at the first mention of (view spoiler)[ twins (hide spoiler)] (and would have figured it out more quickly if that basic fact had been told to us right away). The book dragged and felt extremely repetitive; it easily could have been a short story rather than a full novel. Furthermore, Poirot did not feel like himself, but rather a generic detective who figures things out.

Overall, I was disappointed with this title. Read it if you're determined to read all the Poirot books, but if not, then just pass this one by.

This is the second Christie book I’ve read (after An Ordeal By Innocence) and while that wasn’t my favourite book, I enjoyed the whodunnit aspect, and it reminded me why I love murder mysteries, so I thought I’d read some more of her novels.
