Heutige „Wut“ war den alten Griechen und Römern beispielsweise komplett unbekannt (die viel Zeit damit verbracht haben, zu beschreiben, wie sich verschiedene Emotionen für sie anfühlten), da sie in ganz anderen Welten lebten. Sie hatten völlig andere „mentale und moralische Rahmenbedingungen“,  wie der Historiker Thomas Dixon sagt. * Aristoteles zum Beispiel beschrieb eine Leidenschaft, die er orgé nannte. Während sich heutige Wut laut der Philosophin Martha Nussbaum hauptsächlich physisch oder körperlich äußert-unter anderem durch eine erhöhte Herzfrequenz, erhöhte Temperatur und einen wütenden Gesichtsausdruck -, fand orgé nur in Gedanken statt, war vorallem die feste Überzeugung, dass jemandem Unrecht getan wurde, verbunden mit einem starken Rachebedürfnis. Wie die Geschichte der Wut ist auch die der Nostalgie radikalem Wandel unterworfen. Wie sagt Dixon so schön? Es gibt nichts auf der Welt, weder damals noch heute, worauf sich das englische Wort nostalgia durchgängig bezieht." Es gilt also nicht nur eine, sondern viele Nostalgien zu erforschen.
