Skin soft and warm beneath his fingers, he gave it a squeeze, meaning to reassure her he hadn’t actually devolved into the brutish villain he was playing at. If only someone would assure him it was all an act.

“No, that is not what I am saying. The rest of these villains are just uncouth, and I prefer nuance to my cruelty.”

Maybe it was dark, this thing inside her, but that didn’t mean it was bad.

“She’s not stupid,” Damien mumbled, the only thing he felt capable of arguing against.
