I didn't realize this was a prequel when I started reading it. About 25% of the way through, I was feeling confused about some things and looked it up. After I read a synopsis of Pet, I was less confused. Really, the story and characters could have stood on their own with a little more context. I would consider that one weakness in a book that is otherwise compelling and heartfelt. Despite the war and anger that permeate the setting, the characters are amazingly empathetic and kind toward one another. If everyone could be that understanding, we could maybe have a world where we take care of one another instead of struggling all the time. Bitter is a book that, perhaps ironically, makes you feel hopeful, not bitter, looking toward a future where we have built a world that works for us instead of against us.
