Evenings in these parts must be a sort of mournful solace. Now, in the full glare of the morning sun, with everything shimmering in the heat haze, there was something inhuman, discouraging, about this landscape.

I pictured myself going straight to bed and sleeping twelve hours at a stretch

From the dark horizon of my future a sort of slow, persistent breeze had been blowing toward me, all my life long, from the years that were to come. And on its way that breeze had leveled out all the ideas that people tried to foist on me in the equally unreal years I then was living through.

I answered that one never changed his way of life; one life was as good as another, and my present one suited me quite well

On l’a emmené.”

We just sat there like that for quite a while. The woman’s sighs and sobs were quieting down. She sniffled a lot. Then finally she shut up.

I said, “Yes,” just so I wouldn’t have to say anything else.

. It was pleasant; the coffee had warmed me up, and the smell of flowers on the night air was coming through the open door. I think I dozed off for a while.

...my joy when the bus entered the nest of lights that was Algiers and I knew I was going to go to bed and sleep for twelve hours.

I don't see where the existentialism is gonna fall into play.

It feels as though this book didn't have enough substance, I admit the meaning is wonderful and the last pages are greatly executed; it feels pretty boring. Like I was forcing myself to find interest in the book often. I wouldn't call this a bad book but somewhat disappointing for me. I'm still a bit perplexed, honestly.

Albert Camus' laconic masterpiece about a Frenchman who murders an Arab in colonial Algeria is famous in its time for diagnosing a state of alienation and spiritual exhaustion which summed up the mood of the mid-twentieth century. Today, more than fifty years after its first appearance, we can see that this early success was no passing fashion: The Outsider continues to speak to us of ultimate things with the force of a parable and the excitement of a thriller and remains one of the most widely read and influential classics of the century.

The Stranger A quick read about a man who murdered another man, and I don't know whether it is suffering or something else, but he seems unable to feel anything about what he has done. At the same time, he feels everything that is happening around him the environment, the sunlight, the sea, and the beauty of the world. I know what that feels like. It's like wanting to detach yourself from the world and simply exist in the moment, taking in the environment and its beauty while keeping a sense of calmness in your mind. But yeah, it was hard to digest how people judged him more for not showing emotions at his mother's funeral than for the actual murder. That part was genuinely sad and thought-provoking. An excellent read. Go for it. ✌🏻

I am still trying to find the purpose behind this short novel, with my previous tries gone in vain. I dont see the hype behind this novel; such a great plot idea regarding human detatchment from society yet such a poor execution. I dont see why people end up recommending this book. Lastly, very disappointing ending

A slow one and one of my first more serious social books for a lack of better words. It is very stand offish but an interesting, quick read.

self-intuitive and reflective, this novel truly is a masterpiece, and so fucking clever. the apathy that the narrator carrie’s with him gives such an innately interesting air to the entire course of the novel - it is really one of those books that you sit and stare at the wall after you’ve read. there’s so much to be analysed and drawn from on the portrayal of existentialism through the lense of an absurdist writer, especially due to the perspective that the story is told! the pacing is great; the way it utilised this tension through it was so clever, camus is a master of his craft. my only quarm is in the moments that couldn’t quite find that balance between absurdist thought and the course of the plot, as some moments lacked the deeper element whilst others had too much, to the point where the book felt stuck in its place and didn’t progress.

the style of writing is so intriguing to me. it feels so modern, yet the book itself was written 80 years ago, so i’m not sure if that is the result of translation or the genuine style that camus inbeds, as this is his first work i’ve read, however i will have a look at the original french version for insight :)

i also think that this is one of my favourite closing lines of a book, i audibly gasped as the phrase ended, so mind blowingly smart and reflective. i also relate to it in a really weird way that is super seperate from the philosophical purpose and prose, as an autistic person.  there are moments where i really relate to mersault, the almost separated feeling from your surroundings really resonated with me weirdly.

def recommend, think it would have been a great text to fully analyse!

'The sky seemed to rip apart from end to end to pour fire down upon me' Meursault will not conform. When his mother dies, he refuses to show his emotions simply to satisfy the expectations of others. And when he commits a random act of violence on a sun-drenched beach, his lack of remorse only compounds his guilt in the eyes of society and the law. Albert Camus' portrayal of a man confronting the absurdity of human life became a classic. Yet it is also a book filled with quiet joy in the physical world, and this new translation sensitively renders the subtleties and dreamlike atmosphere of The Outsider. A new translation by Sandra Smith

Seeing as how many people have mixed feelings about Meursault, I kind of feel ashamed that not only did I understand him but I felt I saw a portion of myself in him as I read the pages…

Through the story of an ordinary man unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach, Camus explored what he termed "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd." First published in 1946; now in a new translation by Matthew Ward.

Ironic. How we can only hope to live, only after we truly die.
