Das Buch „Der Fremde“ von Albert Camus ist ein Hauptwerk der Philosophie des Existenzialismus und des Absurdismus. Es beschreibt die Geschichte des Algierfranzosen Meursault, der das Leben in kompletter Gleichgültigkeit lebt und keinen Aufwand betreibt dem gesellschaftlich Norm gerecht zur werden. Durch einen Zufall jedoch erschießt er einen Mann und wird dafür verurteilt. Während des Gerichtsprozesses jedoch steht Meursault‘s Charakter mehr in Fokus wie die eigentliche Straftat, welche er begangen hat.

Das Werk ist in zwei Teilen gegliedert und wird aus der Perspektive von Meursault erzählt. Die Handlung beginnt damit, dass er von dem Tod seiner Mutter erfährt und daraufhin ihre Beerdigung besucht. Er verliert keine Träne, spürt nicht ihren Verlust & weiß gewiss nicht einmal ihren Alter. Auch in anderen Situationen spürt Meursault keinen moralischen Problem mit seiner Entscheidungen/ Handlungen. Er reagiert immerzu mit emotional Distanz, beispielsweise in dem Moment in dem ihm ein Antrag gemacht wurde oder er einen möglichen Jobwechsel nach Paris eingehen sollte.

Der Schreibstil (zumindest die Übersetzung) ist sehr simple & recht modern gefasst. Lange Rede kurzer Sinn, ich habe es gerne gelesen und werde sicherlich weitere Werke von ihm in nahen Zukunft lesen aber.. entweder ist mir die Thematik zu viel oder irgendwas fehlt. Ich kann es nach langem überlegen nicht greifbar machen - vielleicht wenn ich mich mehr mit Existenzialismus und/ oder Camus befasst habe. 🧚‍♀️

A slow one and one of my first more serious social books for a lack of better words. It is very stand offish but an interesting, quick read.

self-intuitive and reflective, this novel truly is a masterpiece, and so fucking clever. the apathy that the narrator carrie’s with him gives such an innately interesting air to the entire course of the novel - it is really one of those books that you sit and stare at the wall after you’ve read. there’s so much to be analysed and drawn from on the portrayal of existentialism through the lense of an absurdist writer, especially due to the perspective that the story is told! the pacing is great; the way it utilised this tension through it was so clever, camus is a master of his craft. my only quarm is in the moments that couldn’t quite find that balance between absurdist thought and the course of the plot, as some moments lacked the deeper element whilst others had too much, to the point where the book felt stuck in its place and didn’t progress. 

the style of writing is so intriguing to me. it feels so modern, yet the book itself was written 80 years ago, so i’m not sure if that is the result of translation or the genuine style that camus inbeds, as this is his first work i’ve read, however i will have a look at the original french version for insight :)

i also think that this is one of my favourite closing lines of a book, i audibly gasped as the phrase ended, so mind blowingly smart and reflective. i also relate to it in a really weird way that is super seperate from the philosophical purpose and prose, as an autistic person.  there are moments where i really relate to mersault, the almost separated feeling from your surroundings really resonated with me weirdly.

It's sad how society decides what "being human" should look like. They sometimes ignore the fact that people feel and express things in different ways. For me, Meursault ain't heartless, he's just detached but not empty(?). 

Meursault leads an unremarkable, bachelor life in Algiers, but his sudden involvement in a violent confrontation throws him into turmoil as he is forced to question the fundamental values of society. Camus creates a world without a God but a society that is still subject to restrictive, man-made rules capable of alienating any who transcend them. In this most memorable of existential novels, Camus pits the lone and courageous individual against the benign indifference of the universe. Meursault's deception perfectly reflects the absurdity of life.

Truly haunting book. Fascinating and bleak vision of the inner workings of a unique character. A parable on absolutism in a corrupted world.

It took me over a year to finish this book, not because I was busy or didn't find it interesting, but because I didn't wish for it to end. The book is broken up into two parts and the second part hooked me to finish it. I find it if you are someone who wants a subjective book of freedom in sense to read this book.

These 2 sentences form a foundation that captures the central theme of this book. The story comes full circle, from genuinely questioning the narrator's lack of convictions to coming to terms with the fact that "what'd it matter" after all. 

In all honesty, it was quite a perplexing read. On the surface, you'd think it was about accepting life as it is, but as the story progresses, the more you realise that it scratches deeper, there's more to it than just accepting. It explores the profound repercussions of indifference in a world that constantly pushes to find meaning in everything.

On a personal note, as someone who has always struggled to understand and interpret emotions, I was able to empathize with Meursault intimately.  Because of my tireless observations of societal rules, I was quick to point out his lack of moral convictions. (As I see it) You are expected to find meaning in everything. But for you to do so, you have to understand the emotions & the sensitivity of that matter; if you fail in that, you fail to find the meaning. And in that failure, you become a stranger, a stranger to the ones around you, a stranger to yourself.

Always a pleasure getting a peak into the mind of Camus. I’ve been on an existentialism kick recently and this books was so deeply engaging for me. Seeing the nobel laureate tackle this philosophical question of murder head on with such precision in his language was really entrancing. Camus style is so beautiful I could only wish for my writing to be so thoughtful and poignant.
