honestly i had super high hopes for this, it just wasn’t what i was expecting

i wanted to like this novella more than i did -- beautiful prose at certain points, but sometimes it felt like clever literary references were prioritized at the expense of a coherent or impactful plot. the characters did little to stand out, although there was a certain charm to the relationship they shared. i'll be sure to read zambra again in the future, but i don't think this was the book for me.
