I really wanted to like this book as I loved both of Michaelides’ previous novels, but this story just didn’t do it for me. The first half was so repetitive and ambiguous that I nearly DNF’d several times. Though I stuck with it, I was bored and annoyed by the characters for the first 3/4 of the book, and by the time the twists and reveals came up in the last 100 or so pages, I was already too disenchanted to enjoy the ending. The plot was clever in the end, but the beginning dragged on so long that in my mind, there wasn’t a final redemption. I hope he writes more like The Maidens and The Silent Patient because I truly loved those books, but this one just didn’t quite do it for me. Side note: I also feel like Agathi and Nikos deserved better as they were the only characters I actually liked and everyone else was vaguely (though intentionally) insufferable.
