I’ve been craving some sci-if and this totally satisfied that craving!

What a fun story! A stellar cast of characters and a super fun adventure. It felt a little daunting at first jumping into this world, with all the new lingo and introductions (and especially with its mix of magic and sci-if elements), but I think that can be normal with this genre. I was able to orient myself pretty quickly, and I was hooked almost instantly.

It really starts out with a bang and you feel like you’re just thrown in. I loved the friendships that blossomed in this book, but especially the romance (not surprising). The story felt original and gripping and I wasn’t trying to guess the ending or predict anything, I was just along for the ride.

My one main issue was that, sometimes, the dialogue felt…wooden. Not sure if that’s the correct word; maybe cheesy or unnatural instead? I don’t know how to explain it, and maybe it was just me, but there were multiple instances where the conversations between characters felt unrealistic. It didn’t happen a lot, but it did happen. I wonder if it continues throughout the series.

Either way, starting the next one now and excited to see where it goes!

this book was amazing??? it felt like an inbetween Becky Chambers book from getting all the interactions between this group of quite different humans that somehow end up being a family? but with more action and a bit heavier on the sci fi side... just deducting one star because i felt like the final battle scene dragged a little bit for my liking
