 I created @WhatWouldMarieDo during my first semester of grad school. I was teaching a neuroanatomy class, and decided to give my students an anonymous mid-semester survey to ask for honest feed- back on how to improve the course. What I got was... not that. I was told that my lectures would be more interesting if I delivered them naked. That I should gain some weight, get a boob job, stop dying my hair "unnatural colors," get rid of my piercings. I was even given a phone number to call if I was "ever in the mood for a ten-inch dick." (Yeah, right.)

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a community of Women trying to mind their own business must be in want of a andom man's opinion.

MARIE: Did she at least get ugly while she was gone?

SHMAC: She’s still the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.	

“Listen. What you said yesterday . . .” He must have stepped inside, because the background noise is gone. His voice is rich and deep in my ear. I think I can actually hear him swallow. “There is no other neuroscientist I’d want to do this project with. Not a single one.”

It’s a blow to the sternum. The words knock the air out of my lungs, and a weird, nonsensical, untimely thought crosses my mind: it’s not that surprising that this broody, reserved man snagged himself a beautiful bride. Not if he’s capable of saying things like this.

At least I’m awake now. “What’s happening?”

“Bee, do you want to stay in Houston and work on BLINK?” he asks again, but this time after a pause he adds, “With me?”

That’s when I know that I’m a lunatic. Insane. An utterly insane lunatic. Because my alarm says six forty-five a.m., and a shiver runs down my spine—or where my spine would be if I had one. I screw my eyes shut, and the word that comes out of my mouth is:

Bro he’s so painfully into you. Just let him finish his sentence omfl Bee. 

“The point is, sometimes dislike is a gut reaction. Like falling in love at first sight, you know? Just . . . the opposite.”

His eyes spring open. “Bee.” He swallows. “I—”

“Levi! Here you are.” Kaylee is walking toward us, an iPad in her hand. I wave at her, but Levi doesn’t stop staring. At me. “I need your approval on two items, and you and Guy have a meeting with Jonas in . . . Levi?”

He is, for unknown reasons, still staring at me. And the stricken expression is back. Do I have a sleep booger on my nose?

Third time must be the charm, because he finally looks away. “Hey, Kaylee.”

They start talking and I walk away with another wave, daydreaming about coffee and a bra. I don’t know why I turn around one last time, right before stepping into the elevator. I really don’t know why, but Levi is looking at me again.

Oh, shit. He answered. Why did he answer? He’s a millennial; we also hate talking on the—

“Um, sorry. This is Bee. Königswasser. We, um, work together? At NASA?”

“Right. Yes. So . . .” I close my eyes. “I am having a bit of a problem and I was wondering if you could—”

He doesn’t hesitate. “Where are you?”

“See, I’m in this little cemetery by the Space Center. Greenwood?”

“You’re calling me from a cemetery after sundown. Cemeteries close at sundown.”

That would have been a useful piece of information forty-five minutes ago. “Yeah, so . . . the walls are sort of tall, and my phone is sort of dying, and I’m sort of—”

“Go stand by the gates. Turn off the flashlight if you have it on. Don’t talk to anyone you don’t know. I’ll be there in ten minutes.” A beat. “I’ve got you. Don’t worry, okay?”

He hangs up before I can tell him to bring a ladder. And, come to think of it, before I can ask him to come rescue me.

SHMAC: I know what she smells like. This little freckle on her neck when she pulls up her hair. Her upper lip is a little plumper than the lower. The curve of her wrist, when she holds a pen. It’s wrong, really wrong, but I know the shape of her. I go to sleep thinking about it, and then I wake up, go to work, and she is there, and it’s impossible. I tell her stuff I know she’ll agree to, just to hear her hum back at me. It’s like hot water down my fucking spine. She’s married. She’s brilliant. She trusts me, and all I think about is taking her to my office, stripping her, doing unspeakable things to her. And I want to tell her. I want to tell her that she’s luminous, she’s so bright in my mind, sometimes I can’t focus. Sometimes I forget why I came into the room. I’m distracted. I want to push her against a wall, and I want her to push back. I want to go back in time and punch her stupid husband on the day I met him and then travel back to the future and punch again. I want to buy her flowers, food, books. I want to hold her hand, and I want to lock her in my bedroom. She’s everything I ever wanted and I want to inject her into my veins and also to never see her again. There’s nothing like her and these feelings, they are fucking intolerable. They were half-asleep while she was gone, but now she’s here and my body thinks it’s a fucking teenager and I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what to do. There is nothing I can do, so I’ll just . . . not.

HE WAS WILLING TO BUY AN ALBUM TO MAKE HER FEEL BETTER. 

“Nothing.” I shrug. “Just that the entirety of your music library is angry white boys.”

“Right. That’s why you have exactly . . .” I scroll down for a few seconds. More seconds. A minute. “. . . a grand total of zero female-performed songs on your phone.”

His scowl deepens. “It’s just a coincidence.”

“Okay—I’m not proud of it, but it’s possible that my musical taste was influenced by the fact that in my formative years I, too, was an angry white boy.”

I snort. “I bet you were. Well, if you ever want to work through that rage productively I could recommend some singer-songwriters—” There’s something on the side of the road. I crane my neck to see better. “Oh my God.”

He gives me a worried look. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing. I just—” I wipe my eyes. “Nothing.”

“Is it about female singer-songwriters?” he says, panicky. “I’ll buy an album. Just let me know which one is best. Honestly, I don’t know enough about them to—”

“No. No, I— There was a dead possum. On the side of the road.” 

I don’t believe in soulmates irl. But in books? Hell yeah.

“There’s one single format in which space is tolerable,” he says.

I jump out of my seat, grab his hand, and pull him out of the bar. He follows without resisting. “Bee? Where are we—?”

I don’t bother looking back. “To my hotel room. To watch The Empire Strikes Back.”

Buen plot, buenos tropes y mucho potencial. El enemies to lovers con male yearning siempre engancha, pero creo que le faltó desarrollo tanto al MMC como a su relación con la protagonista. El libro empezó con una dinámica muy atractiva y atrapante, misterio, confusión, ganas de entender al MMC, pero a mitad del libro se torció hacia algo predictivo, aburrido y con falta de profundidad emocional.

La autora le dio más prioridad al desarrollo de la FMC y el ámbito profesional de ella, el 40% del libro habla de Marie Curie y chistes relacionados, y la verdad, siento que eso le quitó mucho atractivo al libro. Esos monólogos absurdos podrían haber sido escenas significativas entre los protagonistas.

LOOOOOOOVED the narrator for this novel omg she made the whole book sound so dynamic and full of charisma, like everything was coming straight from her and she wasn’t reading a single thing! also her little kid voice and levi voice were tooooo good she sounded like a totally different person! starting to realize that many of ali hazelwood’s books are just vvvv similar for obvious reasons (that reason being that they’re all reylo fanfic lol), but as someone who does enjoy sometimes reading the same dynamics and circumstances over and over again, i can’t bring myself to be too mad abt it. i like how even tho bee was sooooo oblivious, when she broke it to levi that she didn’t think she was in a relationship w him, it didn’t lead to ridiculous miscommunication where levi actually believes her and runs off upset; instead, levi knows her so well that he recognizes the fear in her of being left behind and knows her feelings for him are real even tho what she’s saying isn’t matching that haha. also, just love myself a yearning / pining man sm, and ali hazelwood writes those so so well 🙏 as always w published books that used to be star wars fic, i think attempts to weave in actual canon plot points make the story a liiiiiittle convoluted (cough whatwasupwguy cough) but at least this wasn’t the worst offender i’ve read, and it still came off fairly natural if not still suddenly rly intense lol. overall a rly good time!

Such a cute scientific romance!! Ali did it again!! Bee and Levi are the perfect mismatch couple for everything that they disagree on they have equally the same amount of things in common!! Loved it!!

If I had not read some of Hazelwood's followup works, I would have been seriously worried that she was only a one-hit wonder because this was bad. Its biggest sins were definitely Bee's character (1), the absolute uneven plotting (2) and the absolute insanity happening at the end of the novel (3).

(1) If other novels remind you that Hazelwood - and her characters - are Millennials(tm - haha), this one reminds you that she was also (likely) on Tumblr. To this day I do not know why authors do this beyond trying to remain within their communities (a mostly not calculated way to sell books to a built-in audience) and I am on my knees, begging, for them to stop embarrassing us all. The first person POV only managed to make this worse.

(2) + (3) Her other novels felt somewhat grounded in reality, even if it was a little eye-roll-worthy to constantly hear about how ingenious the MC's were, even if they could not see it themselves ("What Makes You Beautiful" for STEMinists) but the LI can see it. This novel tries to be a little tongue-in-cheek about it but mostly seems to fail because a lot of the events just seem too big to be in a novel like this. As I mentioned, without spoilers, this is particularly true for the ending.

It also irked me how they are developing this BLINK project and are trying to beat a commercial competitor as the scientists are terrified that they might sell it as military tech to evil governments (I guess)... unlike NASA and USA? Did we leave our thinking hats home that day?

This really is the kind of novel that could tank a career, saved only by Hazelwood having moved enough units to be allowed to write more books and move on.
