Loathe to Love You

Ali Hazelwood2022
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a collection of steamy, STEMinist novellas featuring a trio of engineers and their loves in loathing-with a special bonus chapter! Under One Roof An environmental engineer discovers that scientists should never cohabitate when she finds herself stuck with the roommate from a hell-a detestable big-oil lawyer who won't leave the thermostat alone. Stuck with You A civil engineer and her nemesis take their rivalry and love to the next level when they get stuck in a New York elevator. Below Zero A NASA aerospace engineer's frozen heart melts as she lies injured and stranded at a remote Arctic research station and the only person willing to undertake the dangerous rescue mission is her longtime rival.

This was the actual format I read the novellas in. Since I am reading all of this as part of a literary experiment, you best believe I will milk it for everything it has got and this edition has a bonus chapter. The bonus chapter is what you would expect from a Hazelwood bonus chapter - from the POV of the male LI and all they talk about is how whipped they are about their wives, girlfriends, etc. I understand this is a huge romantic fantasy for a lot of people and I respect that. But I also think it comes off as a little too unrealistic to me when the male characters' only personality traits are a hobby and being a big Wife Guy(tm) (we all remember the wife guy from the Try Guys, right?). Very little a man can do that I cannot so it is just a personal preference that they have a personality.

Also, for someone who writes about people in STEM, Hazelwood's work is disappointingly low on "I have a degree, I am sure I can figure this [mundane manual task] out" content.

3 cute novellas about three friends and their journeys from leaving college, adulthood and finding romance. I thought they were cute and I liked how they all connected in the end.

This was a cute set of novellas. They weren’t too long which a part of me liked because I didn’t feel as incompetent😂

Just kidding, sort of, but I like how straight to the point it all was. I will say that the stories were all sort of repetitive with one little plot shift like, being roommates, getting stuck in an elevator, and stuck in a snowstorm. Reading them back to back could make you feel that like it did for me and don’t know if there was a break in between could make a difference. I don’t know which is my favorite but I enjoyed them all!

Ali Hazelwood does it again!

No, these are by far not the best romance novellas ever written…

But DAMN! They’re adorable, spicy and oh so deliciously sweet.

A very nice breather. Good read.

I did enjoy these little stories, and they were such a fast read to get you in the mood and out of your slump. I did really feel and love the characters, almost as if i was there with them. And i loved it spoilers when they all met up and got along no spoilers however they did become a bit repetitive and i feel as if their story could’ve lasted longer and was cut too short and too rushed.

IF I COULD RATE IT HIGHER I F WOULD.

it had LITERALLY everything I wanted in a novel. The only thing that bothered me is that I loved each one of the stories and wished it could be a full length book.

Would absolutely recommend if you enjoy STEMinist-enemies-to-lovers-where-he-falls-first novels.

Nothing compares to the joy I feel reading an Ali Hazelwood book. That’s it. That’s the review.

I lied, I’m not done. Ace-spec (and demi) representation. Smart and capable women who experience real sexism in STEM workplaces. Those same smart & capable women having deep seeded insecurities & relationship hang ups.

Sure, miscommunication is a common trope, but SPOILER ALERT FOR REAL LIFE, it happens to the best of us.

These were cute, but pretty boring.

I preferred "Stuck With You" more than the others, maybe because I highly suspected it was based off of my favorite Scandinavian man, Alexander Skarsgard. I mean, it definitely had to be. The slight accent, the name Erik, and the super tall height... I was vibing.

But I was also sort of bored.

Under One Roof: Upon her death, Helena who was Mara's friend and Liam's aunt, left her house to Mara, but Liam already lived there. Now they are stuck living there...together.

Stuck with You: After a one night stand, misunderstandings cause Erik and Sadie not to see one another until they are stuck together on a stalled elevator during a power outage.

Below Zero: Ian is the only one who can save Hannah from the icy crevasse she fell into in Norway, but after the way they parted, Hannah isn't sure why Ian would come after her.

Loathe to Love You is a fun collection of three novellas featuring women in STEM. While all three are very similar, there are enough differences between the stories to make them enjoyable. The characters are all quirky and likable, while the settings are beautifully idealized versions of real world locations. I usually don't enjoy novellas, but these are quick enough with plots simple enough to fit the structure. Overall, Loathe to Love You sets the right tone, creating three entertaining reads.

Rating,

Loath To Love You: 3.25 ⭐️

Characters: 3.5 ⭐️

Spicy: 1.5 🌶️

Loathe To Love You is three short stories.  Each story in the end wrapped up nicely.

Overall the stories needed more thought. The potential was there to make these stories amazing.

I needed time between stories before continuing to read the next one.  I like it.  It’s not her best work but still fun to read.

The characters are entertaining in these short stories.  Do to the fast pace the characters aren’t flush out.  Would have loved more depth in the characters.

Favorite lines are from Under One Roof:

Chapter 4 page 46,  “Or by . . . God, what panties do I even have on?  Please, let it not be the ones with Jeff Goldblum’s face Hannah got me last year.”

Chapter 5 page 56,  “Yep.  Because he’s from Michigan.  And I went to U of M for undergrad.”

Chapter 12 page 102, “That Firefly will get the final season it deserves.”

back at the last ten years, school and work and schoolwork are pretty much all that stand out-with the notable exception of meeting Sadie and Mara, and of begrudgingly watching them cave spots for themselves in my heart. God, they take up so much room.

When people find out that I have a Ph.D., they tend to assume that I was always an academically driven child. That I cruised through school my entire life in a constant effort to overachieve. That I did so well as a student, I decided to remain one long after lcould have booked it and freed myself from the shackles of home- work and nights spent cramming for never-ending tests. People assume, and for the most part I let them believe what they want. Caring what others think is a lot of work, and--with a handful of exceptions-I'm not a huge fan of work.

"Did you just ask me why we are not married?"

"No. Well, yes, but ..."

"In response to me asking you if we should get Thai tonight?" lan scratches his temple and looks at his feet. "Perhaps not my best segue." His hand lifts to her back, and he tries to nudge her toward the parking lot. "Let's go home."

Hannah stays put. "Where's this coming from?" she asks, just as NASA's deputy administrator strolls in and out of lan's field of view, waving cheerfully. Hannah's eyes fall on the phone in his hand. "Aah."

"Aah?"

"Aah." She nods knowingly. "You've been talking with Erik and Liam."

"You could have called me."

"I couldn't tell you on the phone."

Well. No matter now. "He found an alternative, lan," I tell him.

"Me and my inability to carry out the project are going to Norway, and there is nothing you can do about it."

He closes his eyes. Then he opens them and mutters something under his breath that sounds a lot like fuck, followed by my name and other hurried explanations that I don't care to listen to. 1 free my arm from his fingers, meet his eyes one last time, and walk away swearing to myself that this is it.

I will never think of lan Floyd again.

"Can I buy you dinner?" he asks against my lips. "Before we..?

1 shake my head. The tips of our noses brush against each

other. "No need."

"I... I'd like to, Hannah."

"Nah." I kiss him again. Once. Deep. Glorious. I don't do that'

"You don't do" -another kiss-_"what?"

"Dinner." Kiss. Again. "Well," I amend, "I do eat. But I don't do dinner dates."

lan pulls back, his expression curious. "Why no dinner dates?"

"I just.

"I shrug, wishing we were still kissing. "I don't date,

in general."

"You don't date ... at all?"

He sighs. "Fine. You are allowed one comment."

"And I can make you a bagel. Cinnamon? Blueberry? Plain?"

I try to crack a joke. "Why? Are you kicking me out?"

"No. No, Mara, that's not what I-" His phone rings, interrupting him. Liam gives it a frustrated glance, but by the time his eyes are on me again I've collected myself.

If Liam wants to live alone, that's fine. He likes me. He cares about me. He's a great guy I know all of that. But being friends with someone doesn't equate with wanting to spend every single moment of your life with them, and . .. yeah.

1 guess that's my own problem to solve. Something to work on once I move out and this part of my life is over.

"Of course I'm going to look for a new place." I try to sound cheerful. With poor results. "I cannot wait to walk around naked and gorge myself on creamer to celebrate Eileen's excellent life choices and…" I can't make myself continue, and my voice

trails off.

Liam's eyes remain withdrawn. Absent, almost. But after a while he says, "Whatever you want, Mara," in a kind, gentle tone.

I manage one last smile and slip out of his office as the first tear hits my collarbone.

"I got it! Liam -I got the job!"

He doesn't skip a beat. "The team leader position?"

"Yes.

His grin is blinding. Then he tells, "I'll call you back, to whoever is on the line, totally ignores the fact that their reply is "Sir, this is a time-sensitive issue-" and tosses the phone on the nearest chair.

Then he hugs me back. He lifts me up like he's too happy for me to even consider stopping himself, like this phone call I just had that changed my life changed his, too, like he's been wanting this as much and as intensely as I have. And when he spins me around the room, one single, perfect whirl of pure happiness, that's when I realize it.

How incredibly, utterly gone for this man I am.

Something occurs to me, and I

gasp. "You know what's really shocking?"

"What?"

"That Helena never tried to set us up. Like, you and me. Together."

"Yeah, that's-" Liam falls silent abruptly, as though something occurred to him, too. He stares into the middle distance for a moment and then lets out a low, deep laugh. "Helena."
