Maya Killgore is twenty-three and still in the process of figuring out her life.

Conor Harkness is thirty-eight, and Maya cannot stop thinking about him.

Problematic Summer Romance

I think this is in my Ali Hazelwood top three reads. I haven’t had that for a long time. I have had one of her books go above a four star in a long time. So I won’t lie my expectations were realistic from what I have experienced in the past. I recently DNFed a book with an age gap where they would complain about it and what I appreciated about this one was that they tackled the topic, but they also recognized that the MMC had no impact to her upbringing after being raised by her brother, he actually quite literally forgot she existed until she barreled her way into his life at 20, unlike the one I DNF where he literally helped raised her since the day she was born. I think Ali tackled the age gap so well, and made you fall in love with the characters. And while I was annoyed anytime Conor said she was too young and should experienced life still, one reason why Heartless by Elsie Silver annoyed me, he eventually pulled his head out of his ass and listened to Maya. It shocks how often none of the characters just listen to what the other is saying. So yes, that is why the rating went down a bit, but overall it was such a cute book, with another wedding, this one in Italy this time, and characters who banter so well that you can’t help but see the sexual tension between the two. I weirdly enough liked Eli and Rue more in this one than in their respective book. So overall this is one of Ali’s best books in my opinion and recommend it to read before the end of the summer!

I think this is in my Ali Hazelwood top three reads. I haven’t had that for a long time. I have had one of her books go above a four star in a long time. AMO los "brother's best friend trope". Ali en verdad nunca decepciona. Estuvo muy "nice" el libro y con una "vibe" bien veraniega. Si hay algo que tiene este libro es la TENSIÓN. No llevaba ni cuatro capitulos y yo ya estaba con la boca abierta por la interacción de los personajes. Amo a Maya y su seguridad. Es un libro que se lee super fácil. Anque estuvo muy bueno el libro y la trama, si siento que se alargo un poco la situación de el "age gap" innecesariamente. Me hubiera gustado mucho ver más de los personajes principales como pareja ya que su dinámica era muy linda y su humor es lo mejor.

Everytime I finish an Ali Hazelwood book I think “this is the one, this is my favorite”. Everything she touches is gold. I don’t know if I wanted to be the FMC or be her best friend. She was absolutely hilarious and gave the book so much life.

i thought some moments between maya and conor were quite electric. i loved the bits of the story that were abt their reconnection in ireland (scotland? sorry i read this a month ago lol) up until their break in contact — loved them calling each other and just talking abt anything and nothing. it felt like a connection that was really built over time, not sudden or all at once. that being said, i thought conor laid it on a bit thick w his proselytizing abt why it was ethically wrong of him to pursue a relationship with maya. i liked the first few times bc it felt like ali hazelwood appropriately responding to the haters / doubters of the book. i especially liked how when eli and maya finally sit down to talk abt it, eli actually warns maya to be careful not to hurt conor instead of the other way around — goes to show that the way their peers view this relationship is not through any power dynamic. HOWEVER i feel like he went through his little “you’re too young” speech like five times in taormina and THAT was too much for me LMAO. 

HOWEVER! i thought hazelwood did great in building a cast of characters w separate connections to rue and eli, yet who all manage to bond by the end. each wedding guest, especially the ladies, felt like a fleshed out person with their own thoughts and feelings. loved seeing maya reflect on her relationship with rue, eli, as well as some of the others in this book. hazelwood is also always master class in writing yearners. conor did not match levi ward for me but it is hard to do that and i can’t fault him for that when he’s out there with the most domestic ass sexual fantasies hahaha. 

I DID also like that this focused on italy — hazelwood’s love / knowledge of the place she grew up makes the setting really exciting. 

i can also see hazelwood is trying to branch out from the reylo mold w the dynamic in this book hahaha imo she was mildly successful, but i know she can do better. not my fav ali hazelwood book, but i still had a good time overall!

I enjoyed Hark and especially Maya’s characters and their dynamic in Not in Love so I was pretty interested to read this book. I enjoyed the playfulness of their relationship and I especially loved the banter. It was fun seeing all the different ways Maya tried to get through to Conor. One of the things I didn’t enjoy was just how many times their age difference got brought up. I understood them having a conversation about it and joking together at first, but it started to get repetitive and a little much near the end. Ali Hazelwood really never lets me down.

This book suprised me a little bit, in good and bad ways. I'm a little bit conflicted about it but I do know that I enjoyed myself reading it, the vibes were immaculate and I absolutely flew through it, I honestly couldn't put it down. I read Not In Love earlier this year and didn't love it, but as soon as I heard the premise for this one I was fascinated, regardless. I definitely enjoyed this one more, this felt more like what I prefer from Ali Hazelwood with a better balance between storyline and romance. Although the main plot of this book is centered on the angst and tension between the love interests, rather than having a gripping external storyline, it still kept me entertained. I will admit I have never been the biggest fan of age gap contemporary romances, especially when the FMC is so young and so that automatically made me wary, but I do think this was handled ok, not perfectly, but it wasn't as icky as I thought it would be even if it did still have moments that made me side eye it.

Maya is an interesting woman, she speaks very openly about her flaws and the trauma that influences a lot of them, she's very scientifically intelligent and I found her pretty funny. But I also think she was a bit annoying, she makes some really questionable choices and acts a lot more immaturely than she realises she does, she keeps insisting that she's more mature than people imply she is while do things that just prove how young and naïve she really is. She’s a bit... desperate, I think that's the word I'm looking for... she lacks self respect in many ways by continuously offering herself to Conor and keeps brushing past Connor's insistent 'no’s' despite his obvious discomfort about their age differences and dynamic, and despite him trying his hardest to put space between them. I mean, the hottest part of this story was the use of consent, and the least sexy part about this was the constant pushing of boundaries despite that use of consent. I did end up liking the explanation Conor had for feeling the way he did about her and as a 32 year old his actions and thought processes mostly made sense to me, but I don't think it made her actions feel any better in the end. However, I did like their actual romance, the chemistry between them was evident and the tension was very hot. Their backstory in the flashbacks was cute, their wry humor and banter was fun, and their professions of love were adorable. But I do still have some reservations.

"Apparently, age gaps are highly morally objectionable... Seems like a sweeping generalization. Sure, some are. But you’re an adult. There’s nothing wrong with having a little problematic summer fling. Especially if you walk into it with open eyes."

At parts this read like Ali Hazelwood was trying to justify it to herself. The constant mentions of the age gap made me feel like this is something she felt guilty about writing and she was rushing to defend it. I would have preferred more subtle nods to it every now and again, and think the reassurance of the lack of grooming should've been shown to us through their actions, not told in a way that felt like I was being clobbered with insistence it wasn't happening. There were moments of this that really worked, but then someone would mention "power dynamic" or use words like "child" and "barely legal" or similar to refer to Maya in almost every chapter and it felt a bit jarring after a while. Reagrdless of all of this, the setting for this novel was just what I was looking for, I really want a summer holiday in a villa in Italy right now. The large friend group had some really funny scenes together and their dynamic was heart warming and believable, plus the side story of Rue and Eli's marriage was very sweet. >>>SPOILER

The way both Lukas and Scarlett from Deep End and Elsie and Jack from managed to get mentions in this book brought a smile to my face, I love these little easter eggs.

I think I'll always eng up picking up a Ali Hazelwood novel because I just find them such easy reads and despite having some negative opinions about them, especially regarding the very formulaic characterisations she has with her overly large insanely sexy MMC and the smaller strong willed ultra smart FMC occuring in almost every book she's written. I think this book juuust manages to pull of the age gap and very young age of the FMC by the skin of its teeth, but I can see why this might still sit uncomfortably with some readers, especially when it's repeated to us so often throughout this book, but I did end up enjoying it more than I thought I would and would recommend this to some readers, although it's definitely not going to be for everyone.

listen…. every negative review about this book is exactly right. in such a rare series of events, i do not like either main character LOL. i found them to both be idiotic. i wanted her to stand up and walk away from him so many times. however for some reason, i found this book to be delightful. i was EXCITED to read and see what these two messy dumbos were gonna do next. i will say the beginning was difficult to get into because i didn’t remember anything about book 1, and the prose of this was so ?? interesting? had me double checking like “wait what is happening” but idk what to say, i had such a fun time. i’m so sorry. this book is not for everyone, i did not find it romantic, but i found it entertaining af.

The banter in this book was sooooooo good and payoff was sooooo worth the wait - this was a slow burn in the best way
