⭐️⭐️ I never tire of this wonderful wonderful story! This was my first time with the audio book, and I found the reader to be delightful as he brought James and Stella to life. ⭐️⭐️

On occasion, it will catch on one or two, and you'll stop to glimpse the inside of the jacket, all the while telling yourself that you do not need to read another book until you've made a size able dent in the daunting heap of titles weighing down your bedside table. You can usually ignore this new temptress you hold in your hands and go on with your daily work. Usually. But, sometimes, you are compelled to ignore that reasonable voice and give in to that tarty new tome you hold because it sounds like such a good story. Folks, I give you Alias Hook by Lisa Jensen, my latest dalliance. Oh! What a good premise! What a great story! It is about James Hook, the villian of Peter Pan. It is set in Neverland. But, our Mrs.Jensen gives new life to that well worn tale and has created a Character who is complex and sympathetic. A twist on a tale as beloved as Pan without sacrificing any of the original. It reminded me of reading Maguires Wicked for the first time. Hook, while no angel, has had centuries to learn regret and remorse,and this is his journey to redemption. Stella, the woman who is pulled into Neverland and its neverending ups and downs, is full of her own sorrows and regrets. The two of them serve Jensens story well and their journey is our reward. I loved this book! I absobloodylutely LOVED it!

What a surprise! 

I picked up this book in a charity shop and thought I'd give it a go knowing nothing about it other than it being a reimagining of Barrie's Peter Pan. Jensen's writing gripped me from the start, I will agree its a slow burn but the prose is so thoughtfully and beautifully written it really is worth it. It has been so cleverly written that I truly believed I was seeing the world through the eyes of an 18th century pirate. The romance is enchanting, the world building beautiful and the interesting flip on a fairy tale classic gripping. 

Definitely recommend for a rather unknown book!

¿Se acuerdan de mi amigo no tan querido Peter Pan? Una historia que como libro no me convenció tanto pero como personaje hubo uno que resaltó de todos, mi querido Capitán Hook. Ok, quizá en los últimos años se volvió deseado gracias a Colin O'Donoghue en una de mis series favoritas Once Upon a Time.

En el libro original y los entendidos de éste, ponen al Capitán Garfio como todo lo que un niño teme: la responsabilidad, crecer, envejecer. No sé tú, pero yo siempre me pregunté cómo es que nuestro Capitán llega a Nuncajamás o el porqué de ese lugar. O cómo es que casi nadie ve la crueldad del mocoso volador. Alias Hook, como habrás podido adivinar por el nombre, se centra en el capitán, este hombre supuestamente cruel y malvado que lo único que quiere es acabar con la alegría y diversión de Peter Pan. Pero ¿por qué? ¿Por qué tanto odio? ¿Alguna vez lo has pensado?

Voy a ser sincera, Alias Hook es un libro que se está haciendo difícil de reseñar, me gustó mucho la manera en la que la escritora Lisa Jensen junta la historia del libro original y este, es muy interesante. O como es que podemos ver la inocencia de Peter como en realidad es, cruel y sanguinaria. Lo que me hizo recordar a otro libro, The Detainee, libro dónde también la extrema inocencia llega ser sanguinaria y cruel.

Sé que no me estoy explicando mucho, este es uno de esos libros que para mí son interesantes de leer pero difíciles de reseñar pero aun así no quería dejar en el olvido Alias Hook, si no quedaron muy contentos con como terminar el Capitán en Peter Pan o quieran saber más sobre él, Alias Hook les dará muchísimo más de lo que buscan.

Y ya que al inicio te hable de mi obsesión...

É sobre uma perspectiva sombria e adulta que Lisa se debruça sobre um dos maiores clássicos infantis de sempre, aquele sobre nunca crescer, sobre uma Terra onde as crianças vivem livremente e vencem os seus maiores medos. Desde pequena, foi com medo e fascínio que olhei para esta história e, finalmente, encontro um livro que a vê como eu a vejo: encantadora e sinistra ao mesmo tempo. Alias Hook é mais do que a verdade do vilão, é uma visão, não da destruição da Terra do Nunca, mas das suas falhas, dos seus horrores, das suas mentiras. Com uma escrita elaborada e floreada, bonita mas por vezes exagerada, Lisa Jensen leva-nos como adultos para o mundo das crianças, mostra-nos qual o segredo do pó de fada, os medos de Peter Pan e a história por trás do Capitão Gancho.
Por vezes parada, até mesmo aborrecida, esta não é uma leitura fácil de começar. Entre Neverland e o passado longínquo de Hook, somos levados do passado ao presente de uma forma abrupta, o que não permite ao leitor concentrar-se ou mesmo deliciar-se com esta história no seu início. Não que os momentos do passado não sejam interessantes, afinal são eles que nos explicam quem foi James Benjamim Hookbridge e como ele se tornou no Capitão Hook, mas acabam por interromper a já de si lenta narrativa em Neverland. A autora demora a entrar na história, a explicar e apresentar este mundo tão igual e tão diferente aquele que conhecemos, por vezes floreando demais e perdendo-se em descrições, e a organização entre passado e presente não consegue equilibrar a narrativa mas só destabilizá-la ainda mais.
Quando finalmente conseguimos entrar na história, aí sim nos apercebemos da beleza dela e, finalmente, é nos permitido maravilhar-nos com ela. É numa Neverland tirana e sombria, uma espécie de Purgatório, que Hook é condenado a passar a eternidade, para sempre a ser derrotado, para sempre a perder os seus, para sempre a nunca encontrar a Morte. É numa paisagem verde e castanha, nunca colorida, que percebemos que ao permitir as crianças sonhar e ter um refúgio, podemos trazer o pior delas ao de cima, e quão tiranas e cruéis, os nossos pequenos eus podem ser sem regras, sem pais, sem crescerem. E é num barco condenado a nunca mais navegar que compreendemos que um adulto pode nunca crescer, nunca assumir responsabilidades, nunca encontrar o caminho, se enveredar pela vingança e ódio, se nunca encontrar a paz. E como realmente só crescemos quando amámos, quando perdoámos, quando aprendemos a sacrificar.
Como na história de Barrie, há fadas, índios e sereias. Crianças voam. Crocodilos esperam pacientemente. Mas esta magia não é inocente e o tic tac do relógio não simboliza a aproximação do inimigo mas o tempo que nunca passa nem muda. Aqui a magia não transborda das páginas mas mostra quão presa, quão subjugada Neverland e os seus povos estão à vontade de Peter. Peter, que mostra como uma criança é capaz de temer o desconhecido ao ponto de querer destruir tudo o que não seja à sua maneira, Peter que quer brincar e vencer sempre, não se importando com os sentimentos de ninguém, Peter que quer uma mãe só para fazer o que ele quer. Um Peter que parece demasiado real para o nosso bem. Meninos Perdidos e Wendys vão e vêm conforme a sua vontade mas se há uma coisa que Peter não compreende nem pode derrotar é o amor, a união de duas almas unidas pelos temores passados e a esperança futura, o sentimento que nos faz crescer e aprender.
Hook acaba por dominar a história e, se por um lado nos enclausura na sua depressão, também nos deixa fascinar por quem ele foi e quem ele é. Afinal ele foi um rapaz orgulho e sedutor. Foi um homem sonhador e ambicioso. Um pirata cruel e sedento de vingança. Um capitão que sofre cada morte e cada ferimento como seus. Sim, por vezes desprazamo-lo. Por vezes deixámo-nos seduzir por ele. É normal, ele fascina-nos em todas as suas facetas. 
Alias Hook não é uma leitura fácil, de todo. E também não é uma visão bonita dos sonhos infantis. Mas é uma história sobre redenção e esperança, que dá vida a uma das personagens mais vis e fascinantes do nosso imaginário e permite ao adulto em nós regressar à Terra do Nunca e finalmente descobrir o que é realmente crescer.
