Not my favorite book by this (a personal favorite) popular author. This is ultimately a tale of transformation, but what that means and to whom, is a deceptive storyline. Hoffman weaves a well crafted thread leading us to doubt what is stated from the very beginning an obvious fact. She holds up a mirror to humanity’s desperate need for confirmation of accuracy in our self assured (yet often failed) judgements—especially those formed within the confines of an insular society. This story revolves around a heinous crime—the kind I usually avoid in the content of my reading —, so if you are of like mind, heed that as a warning. The details of the crime itself takes up but a few pages, yet is vivid and lurid enough to lurk throughout the entire rest of the story. If I’d realized this beforehand I would have skipped this book on my tower of Alice Hoffman novels waiting to be read. It is beautifully written, and explores human nature and human experience in the typical way I’ve come to expect from her. So, if you’re a Hoffman fan and not easily affected by detailed accounts of violent crime, it is definitely worth a read.
