A somewhat pointless story about a dysfunctional family and the impact the parents’ actions have on their lives and on the lives of their children (and to a small extent, their children’s children). Many characters but none fully developed. Nevertheless, book club readers may find many topics for discussion, including the patriarch’s relationships with his wife, daughter and other women, the mother’s self-absorption, etc.

I'm torn on this review, because I got the library ebook and audiobook back to back, and it was the audiobook that I could not stop listening too (when the printed page did not really grip me). I've never been more sure the difference a good narrator can make. I enjoyed listening to this book so much. Fascinating story about a family shaped by one terrible man. In this time when reckon with some of the monsters in our society, this definitely will remind me to give more sympathy/space to their children, because they survived the monsters too.

A bad man indeed. Bad men need enablers, though. A bad family all around.
