The Black Ice (Harry Bosch)

Really good! After book 1 I found Harry to be not quite what I’d seen on TV but the characterisation in the second book is closer to what’s on screen. Am I a philistine for wanting the book to be like the tv series? Absolutely!

In this "superb" thriller, Detective Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to the unsolved killing of a young female photographer during the 1992 L.A. riots (Wall Street Journal). In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box," the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together. Riveting and relentlessly paced, The Black Box leads Harry Bosch, "one of the greats of crime fiction" (New York Daily News), into one of his most fraught and perilous cases.

My favorite Bosch books are "Concrete Blonde" and "Trunk Music". "The Black Box" joins them. The setting starts in the 1992 riots in LA. A female Danish journalist is killed in an alley during the riots. As a cold case 20 years later, Bosch tries to figure out why she is in the U.S., and what really drew her to LA at this time. It was thought that she was following a war crimes investigation. It turns out it was for a very different reason. One of Connelly's best Bosch books in a while.

Whole bunch of cliches but well written nonetheless. Suspense was a little obvious but it may just be my general wide reading of the genre that prepared me for it. Good past time.

I appreciate a good thriller so much. Micheal Connelly, according to a dear bookish friend, is always reliable when it comes to delivering solid thrills. In Black Ice too, he delivers efficiently. Bosch is a seriously good character, so well written, as are most of the characters in the story. At no point did I feel like plot points were out of place or unrealistic. Connelly is clearly an observant man, looking to tell deeper stories through his preferred genre of crime. It's a great read when your brain is overworked from top of the line literature - it's a top of the line crime noir.

Every bullet tells a story - Detective Harry Bosch searches for a killer who thinks he's been safe for twenty years. May 1992, and after four LAPD officers were acquitted after the savage beating of Rodney King, Los Angeles is ablaze. As looting and burning take over the city, law and order are swept away in a tidal wave of violence. But under threat of their lives, homicide detectives like Harry Bosch are still stubbornly trying to do their job. With no effective police presence on the streets, murder just got a whole lot easier--and investigating them got a whole lot harder. Escorted by national guard soldiers from murder scene to murder scene, Harry and his colleagues are only able to do the bare minimum in terms of collecting evidence. And for Harry that's not enough. When he finds the body of a female journalist executed in an alley, he cannot accept that he will never be able to bring her killer to justice, and her tragedy starts to eat into his soul. But then, twenty years later, Harry finds himself working in the Open Unsolved Unit, and suddenly the past comes back to haunt him once again, in a way her could never have imagined.
