One problem about writing reviews weeks after one finishes a book is that even if one takes notes, one cannot always read those notes or understand what one meant by a particular note. That being the case for me as it pertains to this particular book, my review will lack at least one point that I intended to make but cannot remember what that was.

The fundamental structure of this book was excellent. I loved the give and take between the present day and the past. Pittman showcased her talent in revealing only as much information as necessary and thus keeping the reader engaged throughout. That being said, occasionally this back and forth created a tiny bit of confusion clarified only by rereading.

For all Pittman's skill, something about the book felt off. The ever-present Christian clichés did not inhabit this book. However, the religion practiced by the protagonist felt indistinct and more than a bit undefined. That was also in keeping with the protagonist herself who lacked a backbone through the entire narrative even at the points where she supposedly made dramatic decisions. I struggled to connect with the character and thus the book.

I cannot recommend this book but also cannot say that one should stay away from it.
