Tarik raises a brow. Sethos has really outdone himself this time. First a princess, now a Master Healer of an enemy kingdom. Perhaps he’s more than just a mouth to feed after all.

Why is it that when I send Sethos for something, he always returns with an extra person?

I bury my face in my hands and let out a scream. The tears come in an instant deluge that I can’t stop even if I wanted to. But why should I not cry? Nuna deserves my tears, my anguish. She deserves it, because I abandoned her to this fate. Did she wonder why I did not come for her? Do Serpens think on that level? Was she hungry when she died? Thirsty?

It is good that I wonder those things, that I torture myself with them. That I suffer from not knowing, that I suffer at all, because she suffered. She died alone and without help.

"Escape? Surely you jest. When I found her, she was playing dress-up with her maidservant."

"Give yourself something to tell your grandchildren and jump, Sepora. You jumped from the Half Bridge, why not from a steep castle tower?"

And then he picks me up and tosses me out.

"My brother has been worried sick about you for almost two weeks. Much has happened, Sepora. Do not try my patience. I'm tired and hungry. Also, I'm hungry."

To be in love with someone you simply cannot have.

Tarik finds it ironic that Sethos's "prison cell" is nothing more than Sepora's old bedchamber when she was but a servany in the palace.

"I do not even think of her. You, and you alone, consume my thoughts."

"In fact, at this moment, I am not a king at all, but a servant. Your servant, Sepora."

"My servant? Well then Tarik My Servant, go throw yourself from the Half Bridge."

And pride of the pyramids, he'll dismantle every forged piece of spectorium in Theoria if he has to, in order to give Sepora the time she needs to trust him again.

Tarik is thankful Sepora has one even-minded parent, since the other seems to be quite mad.

Malgré les défauts non négligeables de ce tome, je me suis tout de même étonnée par ma soif grandissante de poursuivre ma lecture afin d'obtenir un dénouement. J'ai passé un très bon moment en compagnie de la royauté et découvert un univers très plaisant.

Le gros point noir au tableau est le rythme non maîtrisé : J'ai constaté plusieurs lenteurs sur le début où peu de choses se passent jusqu'à la moitié du livre. Et ensuite, vers la fin, les passages sont précipités. D'un chapitre à l'autre des jours entiers ont passé sans nous les raconter. Dans un des chapitres ce sont même des semaines entières qui passent en deux lignes !
Certaines scènes auraient bien mérités davantage de détail ou d'action, notamment une des bataille qui s’annonçait pourtant très intéressante et foisonnante d'opportunités pour en apprendre d'avantage sur les pouvoirs des personnages. 


En revanche l'autrice a beaucoup travaillé sur les intrigues secondaires. Vous les découvrirez après la première moitié du livre. Le résumé nous annonce "when traitors with powerful allies arise from unexpected places" et c'est exactement ce qui vous pend au nez. Je vous assure que vous ne devinerez pas d'où viendra la trahison, ni la suite des évènements. Finalement c'était ma partie préférée du livre : les schémas politiques et complots.

Les personnages cependant m'ont parfois déçus. Je les avais trouvé profonds, forts et avec un vrai travail de fond dans leur construction pour Nemesis, or dans Ally ils m'ont semblait relativement creux - ou plutôt répétitifs. On retrouve les mêmes comportements, et des réactions stéréotypées.

Et enfin le point qui m'a fait enrager : la romance ! Pour rappel j'avais adoré la liaison ennemie-amant du premier tome. Mais malheureusement la route empruntée par l'autrice dans cette suite n'était pas du tout à mon goût. La TOTALITÉ de l'histoire repose sur un manque de communication entre Tarik et Sepora. Chacun campe sur ses positions et se sent trahi sans pour autant en parler, ils refusent de montrer à l'autre leur blessure et affichent une image impassible - ce qui évidemment laisse à penser qu'ils s'en fichent - et cela cré un umbroglio incroyable de frustration.

Je suis contente de la tournure finale de leur relation mais j'attendais autre chose de Sepora. Elle était pourtant peinte comme une femme forte et indépendante et Tarik comme un homme mature et gentil, or la conclusion affiche une toute autre image de ces personnages, beaucoup moins glorieuse.


L'univers reste quant à lui très bien construit et intriguant. J'adorerais en découvrir davantage, et j'espère que l'auteure écrira à nouveau, avec pourquoi pas une découverte des autres royaumes ? J'imagine bien l'histoire d'une invocatrice de feu obligée de vivre cachée et espérant reconquérir son royaume et libérer son peuple (oups, ça existe déjà : Throne of Glass) Je rêverais également d'en apprendre plus sur le royaume éloigné et les faiseurs de marée/pluie/etc .(oups, ça aussi ça existe déjà : Shadow and Bone et Six of Crows)
Finalement, je comprends mieux pourquoi j'ai autant apprécié cette histoire :)
