in this book Not only Daire comes back, but Dace does too !!!! 
Even though he is Soulless, Daire still loving him despite his change(they are such an amazing couple, because they help each other to the full extent) tries to help him find his soul so he can be back to normal! 
So anyways, the Richters like always trying to have control of everything, decide to give out tourmalines to everybody ( those stones tend to be embedded with a psychic hook that makes the giver to have control over the receiver) ; including Paloma in a not so obvious way!
all that leads to a tragic ending:( but making Daire and Dace become closer.
