This book was actually quite a fantastic read, as long as one remembers the age it is set in.

The female lead is amazing. Bright and high spirited, her actions in the book are quite something. I would go into detail but I would spoil the book and that would be such a pity, she is so surprising and her actions keep being unexpected throughout the book.

The male lead... not so much. He is eager to reign over Sophy so as not to fall into step with his former wife. Dark, brooding and Byronesque, he is something of Mr Rochester of Jane Eyre.

However, the book has a strong atmospheric resemblance to Rebecca, which actually made me want to read this book- you have the dark manor, the prominent former wife whom Sophy can't seem to fully replace and a gothic air pervading most of the scenes.

What it lacked for me were more explicit love moments. I know they loved, loved each other but it dragged on up to the grand finale, which was beautiful but really not enough.

Overall, it has a strong classical feel, a heroine to die for and an intriguing mystery that keeps one on their toes, turning it into a very engaging read I really enjoyed.
