           do you miss your wattpad era? then this book is for you!
 
the main character moves in down the street from the hottie love interest, has a mysterious past, no friends, and a troubled home life. she wears a messy bun, no makeup, converse. (unlike the rest of the school. those bimbos wear heels!!!) hates the popular girls, and criticizes them for only “gossiping and abbreviating”, then says “OMG” out loud like 3 chapters later. 
the misogynistic tropes don’t end there! the main character drinks (gasp!) beer!!! she isn’t a fan of the “girly pink shit,” much to the enjoyment of her group of male friends. she’s also different and works on cars! (which we hear from the boys around her is sooooo hot)

aside from that, the book just moves way too fast for me. she literally trauma dumps and cries in front of the love interest and his best friend in like the third chapter. a lot of telling, not showing. all of the friendships seem rushed and unrealistic. and the book acknowledges this by having multiple characters say that the main character magically making people open up is “her thing.” her tragic past is literally the “my parents sold me to one direction for drugs” 😭 and she was also raised by the love interests mom??? but didn’t remember???

the diabetes rep was cool, but i’m not diabetic so i can’t speak much on that. i will say, there was no build up to it. it was a few chapters in with lots of Yasmin’s internal dialogue, but she never mentions that she has diabetes. she just passes out and the guy comes in, holds her in his arms, takes her to sleep in his bed. they knew each other a week at this point. it’s also super convenient that his best friend has a sister that has diabetes too, so he knows everything about it and buys her a monitor and all that stuff.

speaking of the best friend, arden, is just… so unrealistic. he buys everyone whatever they want, including renovating an entire apartment building into a college house for their friend group of like 5 people. he gifts everyone at graduation 1200 shoes, and people at his birthday iphones and ipads. 

all in all, it wasn’t horrible, but it definitely felt like a book i would have loved on wattpad when i was 13. 

if you like super fast and dry insta-love, selling your kid for drugs, secret childhood connection, rich bestie, and oddly placed marriage of convenience you will like this i think!!

i was honestly not gonna write a review until this one single moment. i knew i had to when the rich bestie threw a rager at his mansion with servants and private balcony’s and security and got the fucking chain smokers. 

that’s when i had enough. sell ur kid for drug money, make the entire friend group have alerts on their phone for her glucose monitor, have them be secret childhood soulmates, i can deal with that. 

but don’t say they brought out the fucking chain smokers and played “closer” at this mfs birthday and expect me to like the book
