Overall, this was a pretty decent start to a fantasy series! The magic & world-building felt pretty rote & expected, & sometimes the characters felt more like archetypes than fully-fleshed characters, except for Lan, who was an excellent blend of cheeky & compassionate. Barring a few obvious twists, the plot was REALLY fun — there was never a moment where the breathless action let up, & there even a few turns that couldn’t predict! Overall, while it’s unlikely I’ll come back to this, it was pretty fun while I was in it.
