"This thesis explores the processes by which English-speaking instructors of a failing Japanese language school made sense of the company's situation and their own. A history of Nova Corporation and a description of instructor roles provide the context of the case. Then, drawing on the theoretical perspectives of both Weick and Dervin, this thesis presents instructor-created blogs and vlogs as texts which illustrate the sensemaking-related concepts of disruptions and cues, expectations, uncertainty, information seeking, moving forward/action, and identity. The central role of the Internet and the effect of organizational crisis on individual identity are highlighted. The thesis concludes by discussing limitations of the study and suggesting topics of interest for future research on Nova's case including intercultural communication and identity as well as sensemaking."--leaf iv.
