Diana Gabaldon

The triumphant seventh novel in the bestselling phenomenon that is the Outlander series.

Going into this entry in the Outlander series, I was well aware that these books tend to be a bit rambly (I don't think "rambly" is a word...but whatever). I'm a huge fan of James A. Michener and George R. R. Martin, so I adore long, rambly novels. And Gabaldon has always worked well with them with her wonderful characters and phenomenal levels of detail.

This book was, for the most part, a decent entry, though the William and Lord John plots, which comprised a huge portion of the novel, seemed a bit flat. I loved the Bree/Roger and Claire/Jamie plots immensely, but everything else seemed to be filler, and, as a result, I found myself getting lost in those sections.

The heart and soul of these books is the Fraser family, and even though William is an important part of that story, I didn't find his story to be all that engaging. It drew focus away from the other sections.

Overall, this novel seems to be a transitory part of the series, designed to reshuffle things in preparation for the next entry. My suggestion would be to read it, enjoy it for what it is, and then sit back and eagerly await Written in My Own Heart's Blood.

This is probably my favourite in the series so far (besides Outlander). I wish it hadn't been done in the form of so many letters, but somehow it worked.

Jamie Fraser knows from his time-traveling wife Claire that, no matter how unlikely it seems, America will win the Revolutionary War. But fighting for the eventual winner is no guarantee of safety. And worse still, the possibility of pointing a weapon at his own son, a young officer in the British army, haunts Jamie's every thought. In the relative safety of the 20th century, their daughter, Brianna, and her husband experience the unfolding drama of the war through Claire's letters. But the letters can't warn them of the threat that's rising out of the past to overshadow their family.

I thought Echo in the Bone was better than the last few books in the Outlander series. I really enjoyed that the action expanded to follow Lord John, William and Ian, as well as some of the new characters, such as Rachel and Denny Hunter. After waiting through several books, it was nice to get to the action of the American Revolution and it was nice to see a return to Scotland and characters I have missed. It took me a long time to read this one. The beginning was kind of slow for me. I think the whole pirate storyline was kind of superfluous. But then the action got so good at the end! There were some twists I never saw coming and I'm looking forward to see what happens to everyone next!

While the writing and everything in this book was great, and the stories were good, I felt as though each mini plot could have been their own novels; as this one was so large without an overarching plot (that I noticed).

I so enjoyed this. I don't know what to do after I read the next book.

3.5
This was more enjoyable than the previous one, but still felt too full of extra information and detail that wasn't necessary. But it was gripping and entertaining, and left me desperate for the next one.
