Throughout the entire work it felt as though von Neumann was simply used as an excuse to tell the story of Physics in the 20th century, with some excursions into the beginnings of information technology. Our biographical protagonist is side-lined in favour of a wide array of supporting cast, whose lives are not retold in much less detail than von Neumann's. While I'm sure this was somewhat necessary, given von Neumann's influence on and leaps between subjects, it does make one wonder whether he was the type of person about whom a proper biography can be written. If such a work exists, it is not this one.
