You Are Fatally Invited

So I stayed up until 5AM reading this book. I was supposed to write a review right after, but I fell asleep and now I’m trying to remember what my original thoughts were.

 follows a group of thriller authors who are mysteriously invited to a private island for an exclusive retreat hosted by the elusive, best-selling author J.R. Alastor. The setup feels like the perfect storm: a stormy island, no way out, writers who all have secrets, and a host who might not be who they claim to be. It’s the kind of premise that hooks you instantly if you love closed-circle mysteries and meta thrillers.

 hook me. I told myself I’d just read a few chapters to see how it goes and somehow, I actually finished it. Which, for me, was surprising. But at the same time, I never fully felt 

 the story. I skimmed through it faster than I wanted to, and while the setup was clever, I couldn’t always picture the scenes or fully connect with the writing style. There were parts where I felt almost out-of-body, like I was reading, but nothing was really sinking in.

As for the twists, none of them shocked me to my core, though there were a few clever moments where I thought I had it all figured out and was completely wrong. I appreciated that. Still, I wouldn’t call this one mind-blowing or unforgettable. It’s more of a 

Maybe if I’d been in a different mood, more in the mindset for a slow-burn mystery, I’d have enjoyed it more. But as it stands, I’d say this was a decent read that just didn’t hit me as hard as I hoped it would.

And to be fair, it did hook me. I told myself I’d just read a few chapters to see how it goes and somehow, I actually finished it. Which, for me, was surprising. But at the same time, I never fully felt inside the story. I skimmed through it faster than I wanted to, and while the setup was clever, I couldn’t always picture the scenes or fully connect with the writing style. There were parts where I felt almost out-of-body, like I was reading, but nothing was really sinking in.

in the first like 10-20% I was thinking honestly that I may DNF, that it was slow, that I knew where this was going, and then I was snared in and I was very wrong, this was great! I did guess some of the big twists but not all, and I actually think the author was very good at making you think that you knew exactly what was going to happen and like making it obvious who certain characters were, and then subverting your expectations. for what this was, a closed door island mystery a la and then there were none, this was quite good!

If it wasn’t for my book club I probably wouldn’t have found this book. This concept I have heard of before but this is the first time I have actually read it. But man this one was a true mindfuck. There were so many times I had to just pause and sort through all of the puzzle pieces hoping I’m on the right track. There are so many intricate details that were included that I think every time I reread it I’ll find something new. And this is one I will for sure want to reread again. Now I won’t lie the main thing everyone worked to figure out I did guess but it was a pleasure able reveal because I was so happy to have gotten it through the chaos that was occurring. So I definitely recommend it for y’all to read just be prepared to be on a rollercoaster full of whiplashing twists and you may be confused for most of it but has a satisfying conclusion and is worth every second.

If it wasn’t for my book club I probably wouldn’t have found this book. This concept I have heard of before but this is the first time I have actually read it. But man this one was a true mindfuck.
